About

Sri Soumyanatha Swamy Temple Nandalur is a revered ancient temple located on the banks of a river in Nandalur, Annamayya district, Andhra Pradesh. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu as the primary deity, this temple is also known locally as Chokkanatha Swamy Temple.

The sanctum houses Sri Maha Lakshmi Ammavaru and various other Hindu deities in its sub-shrines, making it a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

The temple stands as a remarkable example of Dravidian architecture, reflecting its historical roots from the Chola period. It was originally built by Chola Emperor Kulottunga I and later expanded by the Pandyas, Kakatiyas, Vijayanagara Emperors, Nellore Cholas, Pottapi Cholas, and Matli Kings.

Recognized as a state heritage and living heritage temple, Sri Soumyanatha Swamy Temple continues to attract pilgrims and history enthusiasts alike. Devotees can participate in several poojas, including the Suprabatham Seva & Morning Arati at 6:00 AM, Kalyanotsavam, and Pradakshinam.

Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Telugu, catering to the spiritual needs of a diverse devotee base. The temple offers both free and VIP darshan, both with no fee, ensuring accessible worship for all.

The temple is open Sunday to Thursday from 6:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM, Friday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM, and Saturday from 6:30 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

The best time to visit is during early morning hours, morning, evening aarti, winter months (November to February), and the festival season. Major festivals celebrated here include Brahmotsavams/Kalyanotsavam in July, Vaikunta Ekadasi (Tholi Ekadasi) in December–January, and Ugadi in March–April.

Traditional attire is encouraged—men are advised to wear dhoti and kurta or kurta-pyjama, while women should wear saree, churidar with dupatta, or salwar kameez. Photography is strictly prohibited near the main deity sanctum, but permitted in outer areas with some restrictions.

Reaching the temple is convenient: it is just 1 km from Nandalur Railway Station, with additional rail access from Rajampet, Ontimitta, and Pullampet. Kadapa and Tirupati airports are 44.5 km and 85.3 km away, respectively.

Basic budget lodges and choultries are available in Nandalur, with more options in Rajampet, Kadapa, and Tirupati. Parking is available near the temple, and special arrangements are made during festivals.

Pilgrims can also enjoy prasadam such as Pulihora, curd rice, and sweets after poojas, with free Annadanam during major festivals.

For those interested in exploring further, nearby attractions include Ontimitta Sri Kodandarama Swamy Temple, Pendlimarri Virabhadra Swamy Temple, local Chola shrines, Kadapa’s Ameen Peer Dargah and Devuni Kadapa Temple, and Tirumala/Tirupati Balaji Temple.
