About

Sri Markandeya Swamy Temple in Rajamahendravaram, also known locally as Sri Uma Markandeyeswara Swami Temple or Markandeya Temple, is a revered ancient temple situated on the banks of the Godavari River in Mangalavaripeta, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh.

This temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Parvati, Markandeya, Parivar devatas, and other Hindu deities also worshipped within its sanctum. Its location on the riverbank makes it a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees seeking spiritual solace and blessings.

The temple showcases classic Dravidian architecture and holds a rich historical legacy, having been built during the Chola period by the Eastern Chalukyas under Sri Raja Raja Narendra, as well as the Cholas and Reddy Rajas.

It underwent extensive rebuilding in 1818, and today stands as a living heritage temple managed by a local panchayat trust. The temple’s heritage and spiritual significance draw pilgrims year-round, especially during major festivals.

Devotees can participate in various poojas, including the Rudrabhishekam (₹50), joint Sankalpam abhishekam (₹200), Ayushya Homam & Graha Shanti/Ugraratha Shanti, and daily Nitya Archana & Dhoopa Prakaraseva (₹20).

Rituals are performed in Telugu and Sanskrit, allowing devotees from different backgrounds to partake in the spiritual offerings. Free darshan is available for all visitors.

The temple timings are from 5:30 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM, with the best time to visit being early morning (5–8 AM), during evening aarti, in winter (November–February), or during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated at the temple include Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Karthika Masam (November–December), the Annual Kalyanam or Swami Vari Kalyanotsavam (April–May), and monthly Akanda Deeparadhana & Masa Shivaratri, drawing large gatherings of devotees.

Prasadam such as pulihora, laddu, vibhuthi, and kumkum is distributed, with annadanam provided on major festival days.

Visitors are expected to follow a traditional dress code: men should wear dhoti and kurta or formal trousers and shirts (removing shirts for abhishekam or inner sanctum rituals), while women should wear saree, half-saree, or salwar kameez, ensuring conservative attire.

Photography is not permitted inside the main sanctum and prayer halls, and mobile phones or cameras must be switched off near the inner shrine. Reaching the temple is convenient, with Rajahmundry Railway Station just 3 km away and Rajahmundry Airport 15 km from the site.

Local transport options such as auto-rickshaws, cycle-rickshaws, or cabs are readily available from anywhere in Rajahmundry to the temple or Markandeya Ghat.

Street parking is available near Godavari Bund/Pushkar Ghat, though it can be congested during festivals, and wheelchair accessibility is limited due to steps.

For accommodation, pilgrims have a range of choices nearby, including Hotel Sitara Grand, Vaishnavi Inn, ISKCON Guest House, and Sivarama Inn, offering options from budget to 3-star, many with river views and modern amenities.

Nearby attractions include Godavari River & Pushkar Ghat, ISKCON Temple, Kotilingeswara Swamy Temple, Sir Arthur Cotton Museum, and the starting point for Papikondalu boat cruises, making Sri Markandeya Swamy Temple a central spiritual and cultural destination in Rajamahendravaram.
