Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple

Nestled in the hills of Sannidhanam in Sabarimala, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, this ancient hill temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Ayyappan. The temple is a living heritage site and is noted for its Kerala-style architecture and spiritual significance.

The temple complex also houses shrines for other deities including Vavar, Malikappurathamma, Kadutha, Lord Ganapathy, and Nagaraja.

Pilgrims can participate in a variety of poojas such as Neyyabhishekom, Ganapathi Homam, Usha Pooja, Ucha Pooja, Bhagavathi Seva, Ashtabhishekam, Pushpabhishekom, Kalabhabhishekam, Padi Pooja, Udayasthamana Pooja, Sahasra Kalasam, Ashtothararchana, Sahasra Namarchana, Thulabharam, and Vibhoothi Prasadam.

These rituals are conducted in Sanskrit, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada, catering to devotees from across South India. Pooja prices range from INR 10 for Neyyabhishekom to INR 75,000 for the grand Padi Pooja. Darshan at Sabarimala is free for all devotees.

The temple is open seasonally, with timings generally from 3:00/4:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially during the Mandala Pooja Mahotsavam (mid-November to December 27) and the Makaravilakku Festival (December 30 to January 20).

Other important festivals include the Sabarimala Utsavam, Vishu, Onam, and monthly poojas during the first five days of every Malayalam month. Reaching Sabarimala involves a unique pilgrimage trek.

Pilgrims arrive at gateway towns such as Chengannur, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, or Erumeli by train or road, then travel by KSRTC bus or taxi to Pamba, the last motorable point.

After a holy dip in the Pamba River, devotees undertake a 5–8 km uphill trek to the temple via Swami Ayyappan Road, or alternatively, the traditional forest trek from Erumeli.

The nearest railway stations are Kottayam (90 km), Chengannur (92 km), and Tiruvalla (102 km), while the closest airports are Trivandrum International (175 km) and Cochin International (190 km).

Strict dress codes are observed: men wear traditional black, blue, or saffron dhotis and remain barefoot during deeksha or trek, while women may wear sarees, skirt-and-blouse, or modest churidar, with entry traditionally restricted for women aged 10–50.

Photography and mobile phone usage are strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and near the holy eighteen steps.

Accommodation is available through Travancore Devaswom Board guest houses and dormitories at Sannidhanam and Pamba, with hotels and resorts in nearby towns like Kumily and Thekkady (40–50 km away).
