About

Kaviyoor Hanuman Temple, also known as Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple or Thrikkaviyoor Mahadeva Temple, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre in Kaviyoor, Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala.

This ancient temple is uniquely situated atop a hill along the banks of a river, offering a tranquil setting that attracts devotees and visitors seeking spiritual solace and traditional darshan experiences.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with sanctums also devoted to Goddess Parvathy, Lord Hanuman, Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganapathy, Lord Subrahmanya, Lord Ayyappa, Dwarapalakas, and a Sage (Maharshi), making it a significant destination for worshippers of multiple deities.

The temple’s architecture reflects a mixed and renovated style, shaped over centuries by early regional dynasties, ascetics, local Brahmin settlements, and the patronage of the Travancore royal family.

Recognized as an ASI-protected and living heritage temple, Kaviyoor Mahadeva Temple is a testament to Kerala’s rich spiritual and cultural traditions.

Devotees can participate in various poojas such as Nirmalyam (at 3:30 AM), Dhara, Payasam, Atimakitaththal & Thulabharam, Vadamala and Aval Panthirunazhi (especially for Hanuman), and Pushpanjali, Archana, and Neerajanam.

Poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, preserving the temple’s authentic rituals. Free darshan is available to all visitors, with temple timings from 3:30 AM to 11:30 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours or during the winter months (November to February), as well as during the vibrant festival season and the annual brahmotsavam.

The temple celebrates several major festivals, including Thiruvutsavam (Annual Festival) in December–January, Hanuman Jayanthi, Panthrantukalabham in August–September, Sahasra Kalasam in May–June, Maha Shivaratri in February–March, and Uthrittathi Attathirunal in January–February.

During these occasions, signature prasadam offerings like Aval Nivedyam (sweet beaten rice) and Vadamala are distributed, and free community Annadanam is organized.

Visitors are expected to follow a strict dress code: men should wear traditional mundu or dhoti and be bare-chested inside the inner sanctum, while women should wear saree, set-mundu, or modest churidar with dupatta.

Photography and electronic gadgets are strictly prohibited within the temple premises. Reaching Kaviyoor Hanuman Temple is convenient from Thiruvalla, located about 5–6 km east via the Thiruvalla-Kumbazha State Highway or Thottabhaghom-Kaviyoor Road.

Auto-rickshaws and KSRTC/private buses are available from Thiruvalla bus stand. The nearest railway stations are Thiruvalla (5 km) and Chengannur (10 km), while Cochin International Airport and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport are approximately 120 km and 119 km away, respectively.

Accommodation options are plentiful in Thiruvalla town, including hotels and homestays such as Hotel KGA Elite Continental, Hotel Centauri, Shamrock Homestay, and Joshy Home Stay.

Nearby attractions include the Kaviyoor Rock-Cut Cave Temple just 0.5 km away, Sree Vallabha Temple in Thiruvalla, Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, Kadammanitta Devi Temple, and Perunthenaruvi Waterfalls.

Free parking is available near the temple, though space is limited during major festivals, and visitors should note that the main entrance requires climbing about 20 stone steps, with limited wheelchair access to inner levels. For further details, the temple can be contacted at +91-469-2619665.
