About

Malayalappuzha Devi Temple, also known locally as Malayalappuzha Amma, Idathattil Bhagavathi, or Malayalappuzha Bhagavathy Temple, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre situated on the Kumbazha-Malayalappuzha Road in Malayalappuzha, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala.

This living heritage temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman) and is renowned for its traditional Kerala architecture and vibrant spiritual atmosphere.

The main sanctum enshrines the powerful Goddess Shakti, while devotees can also offer prayers to other deities such as the Swayambu Shiva Linga, Veerabhadra, Goddess Parvati feeding infant Ganesha, Nagaraja, and Brahmarakshasa.

The temple is a spiritual hub for devotees seeking darshan, with free entry for all visitors. Malayalappuzha Devi Temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The best times for darshan are early mornings (5–8 AM), during evening aarti, in the winter months (November to February), and throughout the festival season.

The temple observes a strict dress code: men are required to wear traditional Kerala attire such as veshti (mundu), with shirts and trousers or jeans not permitted inside the inner sanctum.

Women should wear saree, skirt and blouse, or salwar kameez, with western or revealing clothing strictly prohibited.

A variety of poojas are performed at the temple, including Thoniyari Payasam, Raktha Pushpanjali, Chathussatham, Ney Vilakku & Nirapara, Satha Kodi Archana, and standard archanas and abhishekam, conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam.

The temple’s signature prasadam is Thoniyari Payasam (sweet rice pudding), and annadanam (free meals) is offered during festivals and special occasions. Festivals play a significant role at Malayalappuzha Devi Temple.

The Annual Utsavam, an 11-day festival held in February–March (Kumbham), features Kathakali performances. Other major celebrations include Maha Shivaratri, Navaratri (September–October), Vinayaka Chaturthi (August–September), and weekly special days on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Reaching the temple is convenient: arrive at Pathanamthitta town via statewide buses from major cities like Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram, then take a local bus or hire an auto-rickshaw/taxi on Kumbazha-Malayalappuzha Road for the 7–9 km journey southeast to the temple.

The nearest railway stations are Chengannur (33 km) and Tiruvalla (35 km), while Trivandrum International Airport (110 km) and Cochin International Airport (125 km) are the closest airports.

Parking is available near the temple premises, generally free of charge, with assistance for the elderly or differently-abled. Photography and use of mobile phones or cameras are strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and core temple structures.

For accommodation, visitors can find hotels in Pathanamthitta town, 8–10 km away, such as Hotel Hills Park, Shanthi Residency, Sreevalsam Grande, and Park Residency.

Nearby attractions include Appoppan Kavu Temple, Konni Forest Reserve & Elephant Camp, Adavi Eco Tourism, Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, and Perunthenaruvi Waterfalls. For further information, devotees may contact the temple at +91 468 2300260.
