About

Ramanathaswamy Temple, also known as Ramanathaswamy Kōyil, Ramalingeswarar Temple, or Rameswaram Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre located in central Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Ramanathaswamy or Ramalingam Lingam, this ancient temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and stands as a living heritage site with deep spiritual significance. The temple is also home to shrines for Goddess Parvathavardhini, Vishalakshi, Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha), Lord Subrahmanya, and various utsava idols, making it a spiritual hub for devotees.

The temple’s architecture is a stunning example of Dravidian style, reflecting its historical roots from the Pandya period. Originally built by the Pandya Dynasty and later expanded by the Jaffna kings and King Muthuramalinga Sethupathy, the temple is recognized as a state heritage monument. Pilgrims visiting Ramanathaswamy Temple can experience a range of poojas and rituals conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit. The daily schedule begins at 5:00 AM with Palliyarai Deepa Arathana, followed by Spadigalinga Deepa Arathana at 5:10 AM, and continues with various poojas such as Vila Pooja, Kalasanthi Pooja, Uchikala Pooja, Sayaratcha Pooja, Ardhajama Pooja, and Palliyarai Pooja. Special darshan and abhishekam are also available for devotees, with specific fees for certain rituals.

Darshan timings are from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Both free and special darshan options are offered, with special darshan tickets priced at ₹200. The temple enforces a traditional dress code: men are required to wear dhotis, pyjamas with upper cloth, or formal pants and shirts, while women should wear sarees, churidars, or salwarkameez with dupatta.

Ramanathaswamy Temple celebrates several festivals throughout the year, including Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Vasanthotsavam (May–June), Rama Linga Prathistha (June–July), Thirukalyanam (July–August), Navaratri (September–October), Kandha Sashti (October–November), and Arudra Darshan (December–January).

Reaching the temple is convenient: Rameswaram Railway Station (RMM) is just 2 km away, and Madurai International Airport is about 170 km from the temple. Road access via NH49 and the iconic Pamban Bridge connects pilgrims to Rameswaram, with local auto-rickshaws and taxis available for the final stretch. Accommodation ranges from luxury to budget hotels, as well as temple guesthouses and pilgrim lodges on East Car Street and near Agni Theertham.

Nearby attractions include Agni Theertham, Lakshmana Tirtham, Five-Faced Hanuman Temple, Pamban Bridge, Dhanushkodi, Kothandaramar Temple, and the Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Memorial. The temple provides sacred vibhuti, chandan, panchamirtham, and offers free lunch (Annadanam) daily between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Paid parking is available, though it can get crowded, and accessibility to the main sanctum is generally good. Photography is restricted, with a camera fee applicable and mobile phones not allowed inside the main premises.

For more information, darshan bookings, or online darshan, visit the official website or contact the temple directly at 04573 221 223.
