Poramatala Kali Temple Nabadwip

The temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti, with devotees also worshipping Maa Bhavatarini and Lord Shiva (Bhavataran Shiva) within its sacred precincts.

Recognized as a state heritage and living heritage temple, Poramatala Kali Temple is linked by folklore to Vasudeva Sarvabhauma of the 15th century, with origins believed to predate the Gaudiya Vaishnavism movement.

The temple welcomes pilgrims for darshan with free entry, and general archana or sankalpa poojas are performed in Bengali and Sanskrit. The temple is open from Wednesday to Monday, 8:00 AM to 11:00 PM, with closed or limited hours on Tuesdays.

The best times to visit are during the winter months (November to February), the vibrant festival season, early mornings between 5:00 and 8:00 AM, or during the evening aarti, when the spiritual atmosphere is especially uplifting.

Poramatala Kali Temple is a focal point for major festivals such as Kali Puja/Diwali (October-November), Rash Utsav (November), Sri Panchami/Saraswati Puja (January-February), and Shivaratri (February-March).

During these occasions, the temple and its surrounding lanes come alive with abundant prasad and festive food offerings, while daily prasad—such as sweets, flowers, and sugar (batasha)—is distributed after aarti throughout the year.

Visitors are expected to adhere to a traditional dress code: men should wear dhoti-panjabi or conservative attire, avoiding shorts and sleeveless clothing, while women are encouraged to wear saris or salwar kameez, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Reaching the temple is convenient via Nabadwip Dham or Bishnupriya railway stations, located 2.2 km and 1.5 km away, respectively.

From the railway station or bus stand, pilgrims can hire a Toto (electric rickshaw) or manual rickshaw to Poramatala, then walk 2–5 minutes through the bustling market lanes.

Due to narrow lanes, four-wheeler parking is unavailable at the temple; visitors should park in town lots or near the river ghats and walk 10–15 minutes. The temple’s ground-level entrance is navigable with assistance for those with limited mobility.

For accommodation, Nabadwip and nearby Mayapur offer numerous budget hotels, lodges, and ashram guest houses, including Hotel City Pride and Hotel Shila Plaza. Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard, though restrictions apply near the sanctum during rituals.
