Jagannath Temple Mahesh (Mahesh Rath Yatra)

Dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu, the temple also enshrines Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees in the region.

The temple is renowned for its ancient heritage, with its original shrine attributed to Dhrubananda Brahmachari in 1396 CE, a brick temple constructed by Raja Manohar Roy, and the current structure built in 1755 CE by Nayan Chand Mallick.

It stands as a living heritage temple managed by a local trust, reflecting the Kalinga architectural style.

The temple is especially vibrant during major festivals such as Snana Yatra in June, Mahesh Rath Yatra and Ulto Rath in June–July, Angaraga/Punascha Puja following Snana Yatra, and Jhulon Yatra in August.

Mahesh Rath Yatra is a highlight, drawing large crowds for the grand chariot procession and the distribution of Maheshir Jilipi, a special giant jalebi prasad.

Daily cooked Bhoga, including rice, dal, vegetable curries, and sweets, is distributed or sold as prasad, with community annadanam and bhandaras organized during festival times.

Devotees can participate in various poojas, including Mangala Aarti (5:00–6:00 AM), Morning Darshan (6:00–8:00 AM), Midday Aarti and Bhoga (12:00–1:00 PM), Evening Aarti (5:00–6:30 PM), and Shayan Aarti (8:00–9:00 PM). Special Puja/Sankalpa is also available for a fee.

Poojas are conducted in Bengali and Sanskrit, catering to the local community and visitors. The temple offers free darshan with entry allowed from 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning, during morning hours, evening aarti, winter months (November–February), or during festival seasons.

Visitors are requested to adhere to the dress code: men should wear traditional or modest attire like dhoti-kurta or full-length trousers and shirt, while women are advised to wear saree or salwar-kameez, avoiding short or sleeveless clothing.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the sanctum sanctorum, though casual photography is permitted in the outer premises with staff approval. Reaching the temple is convenient from Kolkata or Howrah.

Take a local EMU suburban train from Howrah Station to Serampore Station, or drive via Grand Trunk Road or Delhi Road. From Serampore Railway Station (1.5 km away), local auto-rickshaws or totos are available to the temple.
