Chandannagar Nandadulal Temple

Situated on Durga Charan Rakshit Road in the historic city of Chandannagar, Hooghly district, West Bengal, this riverbank temple is a significant spiritual destination for devotees and visitors alike.

Its distinct Bengali (Chala) architectural style, set against the backdrop of the Hooghly River, reflects the region’s cultural heritage and the temple’s roots in the British colonial era.

The temple was built by Indranarayan Chowdhury, who served as the Diwan of the French Governor in Chandannagar, adding a unique Indo-French historical layer to its legacy.

The Nandadulal Temple welcomes devotees for darshan and worship during its scheduled timings: 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM, 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Nitya Puja & Darshan are conducted daily in Sanskrit and Bengali, offering a serene and authentic devotional experience.

Entry for darshan is free for all visitors. The best time to visit is early morning between 5–8 AM, during the winter months from November to February, or in the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Janmashtami in August–September and Dol Yatra (Holikah Dahan) in February–March, when the temple comes alive with special rituals and distribution of traditional sweets, fruits, and sugar-based confections as prasadam.

Large-scale annadanam is organized during these festive occasions. Visitors are requested to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or modest clothing such as full-length trousers, dhoti, or kurta-pajama, while women are encouraged to wear saree or salwar kameez.

From Kolkata or Howrah, travelers can take a Howrah–Bandel or Howrah–Bardhaman local train to Chandan Nagar Railway Station (1.5 km from the temple), then hire an auto-rickshaw or toto to the Barabazar area.

By road, the temple is accessible via Grand Trunk Road or NH 19, about 35–40 km from Kolkata. The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, 27 km away.
