Tarakeswar Baba Taraknath Temple

This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, worshipped here as Taraknath, with shrines also devoted to Goddess Kali and Lord Lakshmi-Narayan within its complex.

The temple is renowned for its distinct Bengali (Chala) architectural style and functions as a vibrant village temple, drawing devotees from across India. Located on Tarakeswar Mandir Road in the Bhanjipur area, the temple is easily accessible for pilgrims.

Those traveling from Kolkata can reach Tarakeswar by direct local trains from Howrah or Sealdah to Tarakeswar Railway Station, which is just 500 meters from the temple. Rickshaws and totos are available for the short distance.

By road, the journey from Kolkata via Durgapur Expressway (NH 19) or Delhi Road, then State Highway 13, takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The nearest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, approximately 70 km away.

The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with free entry for all devotees. The best times to visit are early mornings, especially between 5–8 AM, and during the winter months from November to February or the festival season.

The temple observes a traditional dress code: men are required to wear traditional or formal clothing and must remove shirts, vests, and belts before entering the inner sanctum, while women should wear sarees, salwar kameez, or long ethnic suits.

Daily poojas include Jalabhishek, Morning Puja/Abhishek, and Sandhya Aarti & Bhog, conducted in Sanskrit and Bengali.

Major festivals celebrated here are Mahashivaratri (February–March), Gajan Utsav/Chaitra Sankranti and Neel Puja (April), and the grand Shravani Mela during Shravan Mondays (July–August).

Prasadam such as pedha, sandesh, batasa, and other sweets can be purchased, and community feeding (bhog) is organized on major festival days.
