Pathra Temple Complex

This ancient temple complex is celebrated for its Bengali (Chala) architectural style and its rich heritage, with roots tracing back to the British colonial era.

The temples were constructed by the Ghosal family, notably Bidyanand Ghosal, along with the Bandopadhyay (Banerjee) family and other local patrons, and today the site holds both ASI protected and state heritage status.

The primary deity worshipped at the Pathra Temple Complex is Lord Vishnu, while several other shrines within the complex are dedicated to Lord Krishna, Lord Shiva, Goddess Sitala, Dharmaraj, Durga, Rama, Balaram, and Hanuman.

This diversity makes Pathra a significant destination for devotees of multiple Hindu traditions. Poojas and rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Bengali, maintaining the spiritual and cultural fabric of the region.

The temple complex is open 24 hours, though visitors are recommended to plan their darshan between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM for the best experience. Entry for darshan is free, making it accessible to all pilgrims and visitors.

Modest, casual clothing covering shoulders and knees is recommended for both men and women. The best time to visit Pathra Temple Complex is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the morning hours (8 AM–12 PM) or during the evening aarti.

Pathra Temple Complex comes alive during major festivals such as Shivaratri (February–March), Gajon or Charak Puja (April), Durga Puja, and Rash Yatra (both in October–November). During these festive times, simple prasad like sweets and puffed rice is distributed to devotees.

Reaching Pathra is convenient from Kolkata; visitors can take a train such as the Rupasi Bangla Express or drive via NH-16 to Midnapore, which takes about 2.5 to 3 hours.

From Midnapore town or railway station, Pathra village is about 15–18 km away and can be reached by hiring an auto-rickshaw or cab.

The nearest railway stations are Medinipur Railway Station (15 km) and Kharagpur Junction (20 km), while the closest airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, approximately 135 km away.
