About

Papanasam Shiva Temple, also known locally as Papanasanathar Temple, Papanasa Swamy Temple, Papanasar Temple, and Pavanasam Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre situated on the banks of a river in Papanasam, Tirunelveli district, Tamil Nadu.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the temple also houses shrines for Ulagammai, Ganesha, and Murugan, making it a significant destination for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

This ancient temple, constructed during the Pandya period by King Chandrakula Pandya and later renovated by the Vijayanagar and Nayak kings, is a living heritage temple that showcases classic Dravidian architecture.

The temple’s riverbank location adds to its serene atmosphere, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike throughout the year.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM, with the best time to visit being in the morning hours between 8 AM and 12 PM, during the winter months from November to February, or in the vibrant festival season.

Devotees can participate in various poojas conducted in Tamil, including Kaalasanthi at 8:30 AM, Uchikaalam at 11:00 AM, Sayaratcha at 6:00 PM, and Arthasaamam at 8:00 PM.

Special rituals such as Abhishekam to Ulagammai and other traditional ceremonies like Pallaiari and Palliyellu are also performed. Darshan options include free darshan, special darshan for a nominal fee of INR 20, and VIP darshan.

The temple follows a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear dhoti with a shirt or kurta, while women are expected to wear saree, chudidar with dupatta, or long skirts, ensuring modest attire.

Papanasam Shiva Temple is especially lively during festivals such as Chithirai Peruvila, Agasthya Wedding Festival, and Brahmmotsavam (April–May), as well as Thaipoosam (January–February).

Prasadams like turmeric water from the Goddess’s abhishekam and vibhuti are commonly distributed, with annadanam provided during festivals.

Reaching the temple is convenient: from Tirunelveli, travel west on SH-178 through Ambasamudram to Papanasam village, following signs to the temple near the riverbank. Direct buses are available from Tirunelveli New Bus Stand, and taxis or autos can be hired from Ambasamudram or Tirunelveli.

The nearest railway stations are Ambasamudram (10 km) and Tirunelveli Junction (50 km), while Tuticorin Airport (90 km) and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (130 km) serve air travelers.

For accommodation, options include Papanasam Thamirabarani Lodge, TN Tourism Hotel, and several budget hotels and guesthouses in Ambasamudram and near the waterfall area.

Nearby attractions such as Agasthiyar Falls (3 km), Pavanasam Theppakulam, Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve, Paana Theertham Waterfall, and Sorimuthu Ayyanar Temple enhance the pilgrimage experience.
