About

Nellaiappar Temple, also known as Nellaiappar-Kanthimathi Amman Temple, is a renowned ancient temple and pilgrimage centre situated near the northern banks of the Thamirabarani River in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.

This living heritage temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Kanthimathi Amman (Goddess Parvathi) as a significant deity.

The temple also houses shrines for Nellai Govindan (Lord Vishnu), Ganapathy, Shanmuga, Dakshinamurthi, Nataraja, and Chandikeshwara, making it a spiritual hub for devotees seeking darshan of multiple deities.

The temple’s architecture is a striking example of the Dravidian style, reflecting the grandeur of the Pandya period. Originally constructed by the Pandyan Kings in the 7th century, the temple complex was later expanded by the Cholas, Pallavas, Cheras, and Madurai Nayaks.

Its intricate sculptures and majestic gopurams attract not only pilgrims but also lovers of art and history. Nellaiappar Temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Devotees can participate in several daily poojas, such as Thiruvananthal at 5:15 AM, Ushatkalapooja at 6:00 AM, Sirukalasanthi at 7:00 AM, Kalasanthi at 8:00 AM, Uchikalam at 12:00 PM, Sayarakshai at 6:00 PM, Arthajamam at 8:30 PM, Palliarai at 9:15 PM, and Bhairavar Poojai at 9:30 PM.

These rituals are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit. Darshan is available through both free and special entry, with a nominal fee of ₹5 for the latter.

The temple observes an appropriate dress code: men are advised to wear dhotis or formal pants and shirts, while women should opt for traditional attire like sarees, salwar kameez, or churidars. Shorts, lungis, nightwear, and modern short clothing are to be avoided.

Nellaiappar Temple is especially vibrant during festivals such as Brahmotsavam (Aani Festival) in June–July, Thai Arattu in January–February, Arudra Darshan in December–January, and Aippasi Thirukalyanam and Skanda Sashti in October–November.

The best time to visit is early morning, during evening aarti, in winter, or during festival seasons.

Reaching the temple is convenient: from Tirunelveli Junction (2–3 km away), take a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or local bus; from the New Bus Stand, use local bus route 2T to Old Bus Stand and then a town bus or auto.

The nearest railway stations are Tirunelveli Junction (2.5 km) and Palayamkottai (5.5 km), while Tuticorin Airport (39.5 km) and Trivandrum International Airport (150 km) serve air travelers.

Devotees can enjoy specialized prasadam during rituals and benefit from free Annadanam, often provided under government initiatives. Accommodation options are plentiful in the Vannarpettai area and near the Junction, catering to various budgets.

For those interested in sightseeing, nearby attractions include Papanasam Temple & Agasthiyar Falls, Manimutharu Dam & Falls (both 45 km), Courtallam Falls (60 km), and Kanyakumari (90 km).

Photography is allowed in the outer praharams and for architectural views, but restricted inside the sanctum sanctorum. Limited parking is available near the entrance, with street parking as an alternative. For more information, visit the official website or contact the temple directly. Online darshan is also available for devotees who wish to experience the spiritual ambiance remotely.
