About

Krishnapuram Kanthimathi Ambal Temple, also locally known as Krishnapuram Temple or Venkatachalapathy Temple, is a revered ancient temple and prominent pilgrimage centre in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu.

Situated in the area of Krishnapuram on the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur main road, this temple stands as a testament to the Dravidian architectural style and the rich heritage of the Nayak period.

Built in the 16th Century AD by Krishna Nayakar or Sadasiva Nayakar of the Nayak dynasty, it is recognized as a living heritage temple, drawing devotees and visitors throughout the year. The temple’s primary deity is Lord Vishnu, worshipped here in a serene and majestic form.

Alongside, devotees can offer prayers to Goddess Sridevi, Goddess Bhudevi, and Goddess Alamelu Mangai, making it a spiritually significant site for Vaishnavites and devotees of the divine feminine.

The temple is renowned for its tranquil ambience and beautifully carved structures, reflecting the grandeur of Dravidian architecture.

Darshan at Krishnapuram Kanthimathi Ambal Temple is accessible through multiple entry types, including free darshan, special darshan, and VIP darshan, allowing pilgrims to choose their preferred mode of worship.

The temple timings are from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the evening aarti time and the winter months (November to February) being considered the best times to visit for a peaceful and comfortable experience.

Poojas and rituals are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit, preserving the traditional practices of the region. Visitors are requested to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men are preferred to wear dhoti with shirt or pyjama, while shorts, lungis, and ripped jeans are generally prohibited.

Women are requested to wear saree, salwar kameez, or churidar with dupatta, maintaining the sanctity of the temple environment. Reaching the temple is convenient, with clear directions from both the Tirunelveli New Bus Stand and Tirunelveli Junction Railway Station.

Local buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws are readily available. The nearest railway stations are Tirunelveli Junction (13 km) and Tirunelveli Town (12 km), while Tuticorin Airport (35 km) and Madurai Airport (150 km) serve as the closest airports.

Ample parking is provided, and the main entrance is wheelchair accessible, though some inner areas may have uneven stones. For accommodation, numerous hotels such as Hotel Appletree, Hotel Gowry Shankar, and Hotel Ganesh Bhavan are available in Tirunelveli town center and near the railway station.
