About

Nataraja Temple, also known as Thillai Nataraja Temple or Chidambaram Temple, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre in Central Chidambaram, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. This ancient temple is dedicated to Lord Nataraja, the cosmic dancer form of Lord Shiva, and is celebrated as one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, representing the element of space. The temple’s Dravidian architecture, originating from the Chola period with significant contributions from the Pandyas, Vijayanagara Empire, and Cheras, showcases intricate carvings and majestic gopurams, making it a living heritage site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Within its sprawling complex, devotees can also offer prayers to Sivakamasundari Amman, Govindaraja Perumal (Vishnu), Ganesha, Kartikeya (Murugan), Durga, and Lord Shiva in Lingam form. The temple is locally referred to as “Koil,” reflecting its central place in the spiritual and cultural life of Chidambaram.

Darshan at the Nataraja Temple is accessible to all, with free entry for devotees. The temple welcomes visitors from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, with early morning (5–8 AM) and evening aarti times considered especially auspicious. The winter months from November to February and the festival season are regarded as the best times to visit, offering a vibrant spiritual atmosphere.

Major festivals celebrated here include Arudra Darshan in December-January and the Natyanjali Dance Festival in February-March, drawing pilgrims and art lovers alike. Rituals and poojas are conducted in both Tamil and Sanskrit, maintaining the temple’s rich liturgical traditions.

For those planning a visit, traditional attire is recommended. Men are encouraged to wear dhoti with a shirt or pajamas, while women should opt for sarees, churidars, or long skirts, with modest clothing being advised. Shorts and short skirts are discouraged within the temple premises.

Reaching the temple is convenient via multiple modes of transport. From Chennai, one can drive along the East Coast Road through Pondicherry and Cuddalore, covering a distance of approximately 210–230 km. Trains from Chennai Egmore arrive at Chidambaram Railway Station (CDM), which is just 1 km from the temple. Auto-rickshaws are readily available from the bus stand or railway station to the temple entrance on Sannadhi Street. The nearest airports are Pondicherry Airport (75 km) and Chennai International Airport (210 km).

Accommodation options are plentiful, with several hotels and guesthouses situated along East and West Sannadhi streets. Notable choices include Nataraja Residency and ArudhrA Residency, both centrally located for easy access to the temple.

Nearby attractions such as Thillai Amman Temple, Pichavaram Mangrove Forest, Govindaraja Perumal Sannidhi, and Vaitheeswaran Koil offer additional spiritual and natural experiences for visitors. While parking is limited near the temple entrances, it is advisable to park further away during peak hours. The main areas of the temple are accessible, though the inner sanctum may pose challenges for mobility-impaired visitors.

Photography is permitted in the outer courtyards and near the temple towers, but strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum. Mobile phones with cameras are allowed except in the sanctum sanctorum.
