Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple

This temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman) and is an important spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings in the region.

The temple also houses shrines for other deities such as Lord Hanuman, Lord Ganesha, Lord Subramanya, Nagaraja, Navagraha, Lord Krishna, and Lord Ayyappa, making it a vibrant centre of worship for devotees of various traditions.

Built in the distinctive Kerala architectural style, Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple is recognized as a living heritage temple managed by a local trust.

Its historical origins are unknown or disputed, with folklore attributing its construction to exiled soldiers of the Thekkumkur kingdom or King Devanarayana of the Chembagasery dynasty.

The temple’s serene atmosphere and traditional rituals attract visitors throughout the year, especially during festival seasons.

The temple is open daily from 4:30 AM to 12:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the best time to visit being during winter (November to February), festival season, early mornings, or during evening aarti.

Devotees can participate in free darshan, and a range of poojas are available, including Poomoodal and Muttarukkal (₹10 each), Special abhishekam (₹100), and Extended sandal abhishekam during festival periods (₹8000).

Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, maintaining the temple’s traditional ethos.

Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple is renowned for its vibrant festivals, notably the 41-day Mullakkal Chirappu held from mid-November to December/January, Navaratri in September–October, and the unique Women’s Festival on the first Sunday of December.

During major festivals, free annadanam (community meals) is provided, and standard prasadam includes kumkum, sandalwood paste, and floral offerings.

The temple enforces a traditional dress code: men are required to wear a mundu or dhoti with the upper torso bare inside the sanctum, while women should wear saree, salwar kameez, or skirt and top, avoiding shorts, short skirts, or sleeveless tops.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and main prayer areas, and only discreet photography may be tolerated in the outer courtyard.

Reaching the temple is convenient: arrive at Alappuzha Town, proceed to Mullakkal Road, and either walk or hire an auto-rickshaw for the short distance to the temple. Alappuzha Railway Station is just 4 km away, while Cochin International Airport is 83 km from the temple.
