Chengannur Mahadeva Temple

Nestled near the banks of the Pamba river, this temple is a significant Shakti Peetha and is renowned for its traditional Kerala architecture. The temple’s primary deity is Lord Shiva, with a sanctum that also houses Goddess Parvathi.

Devotees can also offer prayers to a host of other deities including Lord Ganesha, Lord Ayyappa, Dakshinamurti, Subrahmanya, Sri Krishna, Neelagrivan, Sthalisha, Chandikeswaran, Hanuman, Ganga, and the serpent deities (Naagar).

The temple follows a strict dress code: men are required to wear a traditional mundu or dhoti, remaining bare-chested inside the inner sanctum, while shirts, T-shirts, vests, and trousers are not permitted.

Women are expected to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or long skirts and tops, with western or revealing attire strictly prohibited. All devotees must deposit their footwear outside before entering. Darshan at Chengannur Mahadeva Temple is free for all visitors.

The temple is open daily from 04:30 AM to 11:30 AM and from 05:00 PM to 08:00 PM, making early mornings and evenings ideal for peaceful worship.

The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, especially in the morning between 8 AM and 12 PM, or during the vibrant festival season.

A rich schedule of daily poojas is observed, beginning with Palli Unarthal at 03:50 AM and Nadathurakkal at 04:30 AM, followed by rituals such as Abhishekam, Ganapathi Homam, Usha Pooja, Sree Bali, Panthiradi Pooja, Mrithyunjaya Homam, Navakam Kalasha Pooja, and Ucha Pooja.

Evening rituals include Vaikittu Nada Thurakkal, Deeparadhana, Athazha Pooja, and Sree Bali & Nada Adakkunu. Poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam.

The temple celebrates several festivals, including the Varshikotsavam (Annual Festival) in December–January, Thripputhu/Thriputharattu held irregularly four to five times a year, Maha Shivaratri in February–March, and Chitra Pournami in April–May.

During major festivals and the Sabarimala season, devotees can partake in periodic annadanam, and standard prasadam such as vibhuti, kumkum, sandalwood paste, and offerings like Appam or Aravana are distributed. Reaching the temple is convenient, with Chengannur Railway Station just 0.6 km away.

From the station, it is a short 500–600 meter walk to the temple. Multiple local lodges and facilities, supported by the temple trust and Devaswom Board, are available in Chengannur town for accommodation.

The temple provides a dedicated parking area, though approach roads can become congested during peak seasons, and wheelchair accessibility inside the temple is limited.

Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum and near main deities, with casual photography in the outer courtyard sometimes tolerated but not encouraged.
