About

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple, also known locally as Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Swamy Temple and revered as the “Dwarka of the South,” is a renowned ancient pilgrimage centre set on the banks of a river in Ambalappuzha, Alappuzha district, Kerala.

This temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Krishna, with sanctums also devoted to Sastha (Ayyappa), Bhagawati, and Ganapathy, making it a significant destination for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

The temple is celebrated for its classic Kerala architectural style and stands as a living heritage temple, having been built by Chemba[ka]sserry Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran of the Chembakasserry kingdom.

While its exact historical period remains unknown or disputed, its spiritual and cultural significance is undiminished. The temple’s serene riverbank location enhances its tranquil ambiance, drawing pilgrims and visitors throughout the year.

Ambalappuzha Sree Krishna Temple welcomes devotees daily from 3:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Free darshan is available for all visitors.

The temple observes a strict dress code: men are required to wear a traditional dhoti (mundu) and remain bare-chested within the sanctum, while women should wear saree, salwar kameez, or set-mundu.

Rituals and poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, with key ceremonies including Nirmalyam/Darshan (3:00 AM – 6:00 AM), Usha Pooja/Ucha Pooja (11:30 AM – 12:00 PM), and Thulabharam during morning and evening hours.

The temple’s famed Palpayasam, a sweet milk porridge, is available daily at the Palpayasam Counter for INR 240, and limited free annadanam is offered as per the temple trust’s schedule. The best time to visit is during winter (November to February), the festival season, or during the evening aarti.

Major festivals include the Ambalappuzha Arattu (Utsavam) in March–April, Chambakulam Moolam Water Festival in June–July, and the rare Pallipana held once every 12 years.

Reaching the temple is convenient: from Alappuzha town, travel south along NH 66 for about 14 km, then turn east at Ambalappuzha town junction onto State Highway 12. The temple is near the East Nada bus stop, with frequent KSRTC buses and auto-rickshaws available.

Ambalapuzha Railway Station is just 1.5 km away, and Alappuzha Railway Station is 14 km distant. The nearest airports are Cochin International Airport (85 km) and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (120 km).

Accommodation options range from local homestays and budget lodges in Ambalappuzha to mid-range hotels like Classic Regency and premium stays such as Ramada by Wyndham Alleppey and Sterling Lake Palace Alleppey in Alappuzha.

Notable nearby attractions include Alappuzha Beach, Alappuzha Lighthouse, Alleppey Backwaters, Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, and Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple.

Designated parking and wheelchair-accessible entrances are available, though photography is strictly prohibited inside the inner temple complex and sanctum. For further inquiries, devotees can contact the temple at +91 477 227 2090.
