Chettikulangara Devi Temple

Revered as the Jagadambika of Chettikulangara and the Goddess of Onattukara, the temple is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti (Amman), and is a vibrant spiritual hub for devotees across Kerala and beyond.

The temple complex showcases the distinctive Kerala architectural style, reflecting its status as a living heritage temple managed by a local panchayat trust.

While its exact historical period is disputed, tradition attributes its origins to Padmapadacharya, a disciple of Adi Shankara, around A.D. 823, with later associations to Travancore royalty, especially Udaya Marthanda Varma in the 16th century.

Chettikulangara Devi Temple is home to several sanctums dedicated to other deities, including Yakshi, Ganapathi, Nagaraja, Naga Yakshi, Thevara Moorthy, Kannamballi Bhagavathi, Balakan, Muhurthi, Rakshas, Vallyachan, and Madan/Marutha.

Poojas and rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Malayalam, offering devotees a rich spiritual experience.

The temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with the best time for darshan being early mornings, late mornings, and during evening aarti, especially in the festival season and annual brahmotsavam.

A variety of poojas are available for devotees, including Ganapathy Homam, Bhagavathy Seva, Chanthattam, Raktha Pushpanjali, Guruthy (on Bharani days except Kumbham and Meenam), Kadumpayasam, Aravana Payasam, Vellanivedyam, Ashtothara Archana, Sahasranama Archana, Bhagyasooktha Archana, Palpayasam, Adima, Nelppara, Arippara, Kuthiyottam (temple registration fee), Choroonu (first rice-feeding for babies), Thulabharam, Aaluvilakku, and Chuttuvilakku.

Free darshan is available for all visitors.

The temple is especially vibrant during festivals such as Kumbha Bharani (Chettikulangara Bharani) in February–March, Parayeduppu Ulsavam from January to March, Aswathy Ulsavam in March, Kalamezhuthu and Pattu in November–December, and Navaratri in September–October.

Reaching Chettikulangara Devi Temple is convenient: from Alappuzha, travel south on NH 66 and divert at Nangiarkulangara towards Mavelikara; from Mavelikara, the temple is 4–5 km west and accessible by local bus, auto-rickshaw, or taxi; from Kayamkulam, it is 7 km north on the Kayamkulam-Thiruvalla Highway.

The nearest railway stations are Mavelikara (5 km), Kayamkulam Junction (7 km), and Chengannur (14 km). The closest airports are Trivandrum International (110 km) and Cochin International (125 km).

Devotees are required to follow a traditional dress code: men must wear a mundu or dhoti and remove upper garments before entering the inner sanctum, while women should wear Kerala saree, half-saree, or long skirt with a modest top, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside ritual areas, but allowed in outer areas from a respectful distance. For accommodation, hotels and homestays are available in Mavelikara and Kayamkulam, including Hotel Travancore Regency, Gilead Holiday, Saugandhika Residency, and local guest houses.

Ample open parking and wheelchair-accessible facilities are provided. Prasadam includes traditional payasams, Vellanivedyam, kumkum, and flowers, with community feasts during festivals.
