Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

This ancient temple, built during the Maratha period by Ranoji Rao Shinde under the patronage of Peshwa Bajirao, is renowned for its status as one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and as a Shakti Peetha, drawing devotees from across India.

The temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with the sanctum housing the sacred Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga. Other deities worshipped here include Omkareshwara Shivalinga, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, Nandi, Nagchandreshwar, and Sakshi Gopal.

Entry for darshan is available in multiple categories: free darshan, special darshan (with fees ranging from INR 100 to INR 1500), VIP darshan (INR 300), and Seeghra darshan (INR 250).

For those seeking spiritual rituals, the temple offers a variety of poojas such as the iconic Bhasma Aarti (4:00–6:00 AM), Garbhagriha Darshan, Rudrabhishek, Laghu Rudrabhishek, Maha Rudram, Mahamrityunjaya Jaap, and general pujas, performed in Sanskrit and Hindi.

Strict dress codes are enforced, especially for entry into the garbhagriha: men must wear unstitched white dhoti and angavastram with a bare upper torso, while women are required to wear saree with blouse and petticoat.

Shirts, trousers, salwar suits, and western wear are not permitted inside the sanctum. Reaching Mahakaleshwar Temple is convenient. Pilgrims can arrive in Ujjain via train (Ujjain Junction, 2.5 km away), flight (Indore Airport, 55 km), or intercity bus.

From the station or bus stand, auto-rickshaws, e-rickshaws, or taxis are available. The temple is accessible via the Mahakal Lok Corridor near Rudra Sagar Lake, with entry through Nandi Gate or Bade Ganesh Gate.

Ample parking, shuttle e-rickshaws, wheelchair-friendly ramps, and priority queues for senior citizens and differently-abled visitors ensure accessibility.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the main complex, and mobile phones are not allowed in the core area, with lockers provided. Pilgrims can partake in dry prasad packets, Panchamrita, and free vegetarian meals at the Annakshetra.
