Kapilash Chandrasekhar Temple

Perched amidst the scenic Kapilash Reserve Forest, this ancient temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva and is a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings.

The temple, built during the Chola period by King Narasinghdeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, stands as a living heritage temple and is recognized as a state heritage site.

Its architecture reflects the classic Kalinga style, with intricate carvings and a serene hilltop setting that draws pilgrims and visitors year-round.

Alongside Lord Shiva, the temple also houses shrines for other deities including Lord Patita Pavana Jagannath, Lord Ganesh, Kartikeya, Ganga Devi, Viswanatha (Budha Linga), Narayana, and Parvati, making it a spiritually vibrant complex.

Kapilash Chandrasekhar Temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 1:30 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with extended hours during festival days. Free darshan is available for all devotees.

The daily pooja schedule begins with Mangala Alati at 5:30 AM, followed by Abhisheka and daily Dhoop/Puja through the morning and midday. Sandhya Alati (Evening Aarti) takes place at 7:00 PM, and the Bada Singhara Ritual & Closing is observed between 8:30 PM and 9:00 PM.

Rituals are conducted in both Sanskrit and Odia languages. The temple comes alive during major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (Jagaran) in February–March, Shravan Somwaar in July–August, Kartika Purnima in November, as well as Ashokastami and Sankranti.

During these times, devotees can participate in mass annadanam and receive traditional prasadam like Mahaprasad, sweet boot, sugar-candy, and fruit.

Reaching the temple is convenient: arrive at Dhenkanal Town via NH-55, then take Kapilash Road northeast for about 20–24 km to the base of Kapilash Hill.

From the foothills, pilgrims can either climb 1,352 steps or use the motorable ghat road (about 5 km) to reach the hilltop parking area near the temple. Designated parking is available at both the foothill and hilltop, with nominal fees and basic accessibility assistance.

For accommodation, options include Nirupama Hotel near the foothills, Dhenkanal Palace (heritage homestay, 24 km away), Hotel Surya in Dhenkanal town, and B K Agro Resort along the temple route.

Nearby attractions such as Saptasajya, Joranda (Mahima Gadi), Ganesh Bazaar, Dhenkanal Town, and Kapilash Science Park & Deer Park add to the pilgrimage experience. Photography is permitted in the outer temple premises and hill surroundings, but not inside the main sanctum.

The best time to visit is during winter (November–February), monsoon (June–September), early mornings, or the vibrant festival season. Devotees are advised to follow the temple’s dress code for men and women to maintain the sanctity of the inner sanctum.
