Birupakshya Temple Boudh

Set amidst scenic hills and along a riverbank, this ancient temple is a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings of Lord Shiva, as well as other deities such as Anandeswara and Jageswara (Anandeswar Mahadev).

The temple is renowned for its classic Kalinga architecture, reflecting the region’s rich heritage and deep-rooted traditions. The temple welcomes pilgrims and visitors daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Free darshan is available to all, ensuring an inclusive spiritual experience.

The best time to visit Birupakshya Temple is during the winter months from November to February, or in the early morning hours between 5:00 AM and 12:00 PM, when the serene environment enhances the devotional atmosphere.

The temple comes alive during major festivals, especially Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Shravana month observances (July–August), and Kartika Purnima (October–November), drawing large gatherings of devotees.

Poojas at Birupakshya Temple include the sacred Rudrabhishek, Jala Lagi (offering of sacred water or milk), and the daily Sandhya Aarti. Rituals are conducted in both Sanskrit and Odia, preserving the temple’s traditional practices.

After aarti, devotees receive simple dry or fruit prasadam, and large-scale annadanam is organized during Maha Shivaratri.

Visitors are expected to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional Indian attire such as dhoti and kurta or modest formal wear, while women are encouraged to wear saree or salwar-kameez.

Shorts, sleeveless vests, and revealing clothing are discouraged to maintain the sanctity of the premises. To reach Birupakshya Temple, start from Boudh Town and head southeast on NH57 towards Kandhamal/Phulbani, then continue via regional roads to Chakapada.

The journey covers approximately 81 km and takes about 2 hours 15 minutes. The nearest railway station is Boudh Railway Station (Sarasara), just 5 km away, with other options including Bolangir, Rairakhol, and Berhampur stations at greater distances.

Basic open-air parking and wheelchair-accessible facilities are available near the temple, though the inner steps may require assistance. Photography and mobile phones are strictly prohibited near the main deity, but casual photography of the outer temple is generally permitted with staff approval.

Accommodation is limited to basic options in nearby towns like Phulbani and Boudh, as there are no major hotels at the temple site itself. Birupakshya Temple Boudh stands as a living heritage temple, offering a tranquil and spiritually enriching experience for all who visit.
