About

Himavad Gopalaswamy Temple, also known locally as Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta, Snow Krishna Hill, or Kamalachala, is a revered hill temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, accompanied by deities Rukmini and Satyabhama.

Situated atop the misty Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta near Gundlupet in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, this ancient temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre and is renowned for its Dravidian architectural style.

The temple is a living heritage site, originally built by Hoysala King Ballala, and continues to draw devotees and visitors seeking spiritual solace and scenic beauty.

The temple operates daily from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with the best time to visit being early morning or during the winter months from November to February, when the hill is often shrouded in mist.

Devotees can participate in poojas such as the Nithyakattale Pooje and the Suprabatham, which is performed between 9:30 AM and 10:00 AM. Rituals are conducted in Kannada, and darshan is free for all visitors.

Modest, traditional attire is recommended, with men advised to wear dhoti or pants and shirt, and women to opt for saree or salwar kameez. For those planning a visit, reaching the temple involves a scenic drive.

Travelers must first arrive at Hangala village on the Mysore-Ooty Highway (NH-181/NH-212), then follow signs to Gopalaswamy Hills Road.

After parking at the base near the Forest Department check-post, visitors are required to take a KSRTC shuttle bus or an authorized jeep for the final 6 km uphill, as private vehicles are not permitted beyond this point. There is a large, free parking area at the base for convenience.

Nearby railway stations include Chamarajanagar (35 km) and Mysore (70 km), while the nearest airports are Mysore Airport (75 km) and Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore (230 km).

Accommodation options are available in Gundlupet, Bandipur, and Mysore, but overnight stay on the hilltop is not allowed. The temple celebrates several festivals, including Gopalaswamy Brahma Rathotsava in March, Sravana Masa Saturdays, and Krishnashtami during August-September.

Free annadanam is offered on Saturdays and Sundays, and prasadam is distributed after the afternoon closing. Photography is permitted in the temple surroundings, though drones are strictly prohibited, and the area is maintained as a plastic-free, eco-sensitive zone.

Visitors can also explore attractions such as Bandipur National Park, Gundlupet’s sunflower fields, Mudumalai National Park, Nanjangud Srikanteshwara Temple, and Ooty, making Himavad Gopalaswamy Temple a spiritually enriching and scenic destination in Karnataka.
