Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple

This ancient hill temple, built in the Dravidian architectural style, is dedicated primarily to Lord Vishnu and is revered as a living heritage temple.

The temple complex also houses shrines for other deities including Ranganayaki (Alamelumangai), Mahalakshmi, Lord Gangadhareshwara (Shiva), Anjaneyaswamy (Hanuman), and Gajendraswamy, making it a spiritually significant destination for devotees of multiple traditions.

The temple is open daily from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Early mornings between 5 and 8 AM, as well as the winter months from November to February, are considered the best times to visit, especially during the vibrant festival season.

The dress code is strictly traditional: men are encouraged to wear dhoti with an upper cloth or trousers with collared shirts, avoiding shorts and sleeveless attire, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or long modest dresses.

Darshan at Biligiri Ranganathaswamy Temple is free for all devotees.

The temple conducts a variety of poojas in Sanskrit and Kannada, including Suprabhatham Pooja in the early morning, Nithyakattale Pooje, Thulasi-Kumkuma Sahasranama and Ashtothram, Panchamritha Abhisheka (Fridays only), and special rituals such as Gajalakshmi Ammanavara Uthsava, Garudotsava, Ranga Mantapothsava, Samoohika Kalyanothsava during the annual Rathotsava, and nightly Shayanothsava.

Pooja prices range from INR 20 to INR 800 depending on the ritual.

Major festivals celebrated here include the Rathotsava (Annual Car Festival) in January, Brahma Rathotsava in April-May (Vaishakha), Vaikunta Ekadashi and Dhanurmasa Pooja in December-January, and Ugadi (Kargalade Festival) in March-April.

During peak hours and major festivals, devotees are served free annadanam, with prasadam such as puliyogare, sweet payasam, and laddu distributed regularly.

Reaching the temple is convenient from Bengaluru and Mysore, with clear road directions via Maddur, Malavalli, Kollegala, and Yelandur, leading up the ghat road to BR Hills. The nearest railway stations are Chamarajanagar (40 km), Mysuru Junction (85 km), and Bengaluru City (175 km).

Mysore Airport is 90 km away, with Coimbatore and Bengaluru airports also accessible. Paid parking is available at the base and near the entrance, but please note the temple is atop a hill with 50–150 steps and no wheelchair access.
