About

Gupt Godavari Temple, also known as Gupt Godavari Caves, is a unique cave temple and pilgrimage centre located in Tendhee Patmaniya Village near Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh.

Revered for its association with Lord Rama, the temple also houses shrines dedicated to Goddess Sita, Lakshmana, Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva.

Its distinctive cave architecture and serene hilltop setting make it a sought-after destination for devotees and travelers seeking spiritual solace and a glimpse into ancient traditions. The temple is open for darshan from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with free entry for all visitors.

For the best experience, it is recommended to visit early in the morning between 5 and 8 AM, especially during the winter months from November to February, when the weather is pleasant for exploring the caves and climbing the stairs.

The dress code encourages modest, light, and comfortable clothing, with footwear suitable for wet or uneven surfaces, as the cave passages may involve walking through water.

Gupt Godavari Temple is a vibrant site during major Hindu festivals such as Diwali (October–November), Ram Navami (March–April), Makar Sankranti (January), and Amavasya (new moon days), drawing pilgrims from across the region.

Poojas and rituals are conducted in Hindi, and while there is no formal prasadam or annadanam, devotees can offer flowers and local items, and food is available at nearby teerths and ashrams. Reaching the temple is straightforward from Chitrakoot Dham (Karwi), which is about 11 km away.

Visitors can hire a private taxi, auto-rickshaw, or take a local bus from Karwi town, traveling towards Satna Road in the direction of Sati Anusuya Ashram. The journey covers approximately 18–22 km and takes about 35–45 minutes to reach the base of the hill.

From there, a climb of over 150 stairs leads to the cave entrance. The site provides a dedicated parking area near the entrance, though it is not wheelchair accessible due to the stairs and cave passages.

For those planning an extended stay, accommodation options include MP Tourism hotels, ashrams, dharamshalas, and private hotels or lodges in Sitapur and around Kamadgiri, located 7–8 km from the temple.

Nearby attractions such as Sati Anusuya Ashram, Kamadgiri Parvat & Temple, Sphatik Shila, Janki Kund, Hanuman Dhara, and Ganesh Bagh offer additional spiritual and scenic experiences within a 10–15 km radius.

Photography is permitted in the surrounding areas and the first large cave, though restrictions may apply in sacred or narrow sections as directed by local guides or priests. For more information, visitors can refer to the official website or contact the temple at 7042940079.

Gupt Godavari Temple in Chitrakoot stands as a remarkable destination for devotees and tourists, blending natural beauty, spiritual ambiance, and ancient heritage.
