About

Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, also known locally as Gangaikondacholeeswaram Temple, Brihadeeswarar Temple, and Gangaikondacholisvarar Temple, is a renowned ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated in the city of Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Ariyalur district, Tamil Nadu, this temple is a significant pilgrimage centre and a prominent example of Dravidian architecture. Built during the illustrious Chola period by Rajendra Chola I, it stands as a testament to the grandeur of royal temple construction and is recognized as an ASI protected monument, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a living heritage temple.

Pilgrims visiting the temple can have darshan of Lord Shiva, along with shrines for other deities such as Vishnu, Durga, Surya, Harihara, and Ardhanarishvara. The temple offers both free darshan and special darshan, the latter available for a fee of ₹100. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, making it convenient for devotees to plan their visit. The best time to visit is during the winter months from November to February, or during the early morning and evening aarti times for a serene spiritual experience.

A series of poojas are performed daily in Tamil and Sanskrit, including Kala Sandhi (Morning Pooja) at 9:00 AM, Uchi Kalam (Mid-Noon Pooja) at 12:00 PM, Sayaratchai (Evening Pooja) at 6:00 PM, and Artha Jamam (Night Pooja) at 8:00 PM. Prasadam is distributed after poojas, and annadanam is commonly organized during major festivals. The temple celebrates important festivals such as Shivarathri in February–March (Masi), Maasi Magham in February–March, Aipassi Pournami in October–November (Aipassi), and Thiruvadirai in December–January (Margazhi).

For those planning a visit, modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required for both men and women. The temple is easily accessible by road, with designated parking available outside the complex. Directions are straightforward from Ariyalur, Kumbakonam, Trichy, and Chennai, and the nearest railway stations are Kumbakonam, Ariyalur, and Jayankondam. Tiruchirappalli International Airport is about 100 km away, while Chennai International Airport is approximately 250 km from the temple. Accommodation options include budget and mid-range hotels in Jayamkondam and Kumbakonam, as well as TTDC Guest Houses in nearby tourist areas. Photography is permitted within the temple complex, allowing visitors to capture the architectural splendor. Nearby attractions include Tharasuram Airavatesvara Temple, Kumbakonam Temples, Darasuram, and Srimushnam Bhuvaraha Swamy Temple, making Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple a must-visit destination for pilgrims and heritage enthusiasts alike.
