About

Chauragarh Shiva Temple, also known locally as Chhota Mahadeo Mandir and Shri Chaureswar Mahadev Mandir, is a revered hill temple and pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Perched atop Chauragarh Hill in the Satpura Range near Pachmarhi, Narmadapuram district, Madhya Pradesh, this ancient temple draws devotees and trekkers alike for its spiritual ambiance and scenic surroundings.

The temple is also home to shrines for Lord Ganesha, Lord Hanuman, and Bhairav, making it a significant destination for those seeking blessings from multiple deities. The temple’s daily timings are from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with darshan available free of charge.

Devotees can participate in various poojas, including the Morning Aarti at 6:00 AM, Afternoon Aarti at 1:00 PM, and Evening Aarti at 7:00 PM. Jal Abhishek is also performed, and rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi.

The best time to visit Chauragarh Shiva Temple is during the early morning hours, especially between 5–8 AM, and during the winter months from November to February or the monsoon season from June to September.

The temple becomes particularly vibrant during major festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February–March) and the Shravan month festivities (July–August). Reaching the temple involves a memorable journey.

Pilgrims can arrive at Pipariya Railway Station (50 km away) or Itarsi Junction (115 km), with the nearest airports being Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal (220 km), Jabalpur Airport (250 km), and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur (300 km).

From Pachmarhi, visitors typically hire a local taxi or Gypsy to the Bada Mahadev/Gupt Mahadev temple complex, park at the designated area, and then begin a forest trek of about 0.5–1 km.

The ascent to Chauragarh Shiva Temple requires climbing approximately 1,300 stone steps over a 3.5–4 km trek, taking around 2–3 hours. For accommodation, MP Tourism hotels and private hotels are available in Pachmarhi, 11–15 km from the trek base.

There is also a basic dharamshala at the temple summit for emergency rest. The temple is recognized as a state heritage site and is believed to have been built by the Gond Dynasty, notably King Sangram Shah.

Photography of the landscape and exterior is permitted if not disruptive, but photography inside the sanctum or during rituals is restricted. Simple prasad such as bel patra, flowers, fruits, and dry sweets is offered, with temporary food distribution during major festivals.

Visitors are advised to follow the traditional dress code and note that the temple is not wheelchair accessible.

Nearby attractions include Bada Mahadev & Gupt Mahadev Caves, Priyadarshini Point, Dhoopgarh, Bee Falls, and Jatashankar Temple, making Chauragarh Shiva Temple a spiritual and scenic highlight of Pachmarhi.
