Beleswar Shiva Temple

This ancient seaside temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and stands as a significant spiritual destination for devotees and travelers seeking tranquility by the Bay of Bengal.

The temple is renowned for its traditional Kalinga architectural style and its peaceful location at the confluence of the Nuanai River and the sea. As a village temple with deep local roots, it is managed by a panchayat or local trust, reflecting the community’s devotion and heritage.

The exact historical period of the temple is unknown, with its origins attributed to local community efforts or minor royal patronage. Beleswar Shiva Temple welcomes visitors daily with darshan timings from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

Free darshan is available to all devotees. The best time to visit is during the winter months (November to February), in the early morning hours between 5 and 8 AM, or during the evening aarti, when the temple’s spiritual ambiance is at its peak.

Devotees can participate in poojas such as Jalabhishek, Mangal Aarti, and Sandhya Aarti, conducted in Odia and Sanskrit. The temple comes alive during major festivals like Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Shravana Somavar (July-August), and Kartika Purnima (October-November).

During these occasions, simple dry prasadam such as sugar candies, puffed rice, fruits, and sweet rice or khichdi is distributed, and annadanam (free mass feeding) is organized, especially during Maha Shivaratri.

Visitors are advised to adhere to the temple’s dress code: men should wear traditional or modest casual attire such as dhoti, kurta, or clean trousers/jeans with a conservative shirt, avoiding shorts or sleeveless vests inside the sanctum.

Women are encouraged to wear saree, salwar kameez, or a conservative kurta set. Reaching Beleswar Shiva Temple is convenient from Puri Railway Station, located about 14 km away, or from Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar, approximately 69 km from the temple.

From Puri, the temple is accessible via the coastal Puri-Konark Marine Drive, with auto-rickshaws or taxis available for the 30-45 minute journey. Informal open-air parking is available near the approach road, though the sandy terrain and traditional steps may limit wheelchair accessibility.

Photography is permitted in the outer courtyards and beach area, but strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum.
