About

Bakreshwar Mahishmardini Temple, also known locally as Vakreshwar Shakti Peeth, Bakreswar Dham, and Baba Bakranath Temple, is a revered Shakti Peetha situated on the banks of the Bakreshwar River in Gohaliara, Bakreshwar, Birbhum district, West Bengal.

This ancient pilgrimage centre is dedicated primarily to Goddess Shakti, with the temple complex also housing shrines for Lord Shiva (Bakranath/Vakranath), Ashtavakra Muni, Bhavatarini (Kali), and Batuk Bhairav (Vatuka Bhairava).

The temple is renowned for its Kalinga architectural style and holds the status of a living heritage temple, drawing devotees and spiritual seekers from across the region.

The temple’s darshan timings are from 5:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, providing ample opportunity for devotees to participate in rituals and seek blessings. Free darshan is available for all visitors.

Daily poojas include the Morning Aarti at 6:30 AM and the Evening Aarti from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM, along with Archana, Pushpanjali, Sindoor rituals, and Abhishekam. These rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Bengali, reflecting the temple’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions.

Bakreshwar Mahishmardini Temple is especially vibrant during Maha Shivaratri (February–March) and Durga Puja/Navratri (September–October), when special community meals and elaborate festivities are organized.

Standard prasad, including sweets, sugar drops, flowers, and vibhuti/sindoor, is distributed daily to devotees.

Visitors are expected to adhere to a modest dress code: men should wear traditional or conservative attire such as full-length trousers, dhotis, or pyjamas with shirts or kurtas, while women are encouraged to wear sarees or salwar kameez.

Leather items are strictly prohibited within the temple premises. The temple is easily accessible from Kolkata, approximately 230 km away. Pilgrims can take a train from Howrah or Sealdah to Dubrajpur or Suri, followed by a taxi or auto to Bakreshwar.

Buses are also available from Kolkata (Esplanade) to Suri, with local transport options to the temple.

The nearest railway stations are Dubrajpur (7 km), Siuri/Suri (20 km), and Andal Junction (63 km), while the closest airports are Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Durgapur (50 km) and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata (230 km).

For accommodation, devotees can choose from the government-run Bakreshwar Tourist Lodge, local private hotels and guest houses near the temple, or extended stay options in Bolpur/Santiniketan, about 40 km away.

Ample parking is available, with step-free access in the outer complex, though stairs are required to reach the inner sanctum. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the core temple premises and inner sanctum, but exterior photos may be taken from a distance if crowds permit.

Nearby attractions include the Bakreshwar Hot Springs, Bakreswar Dam, Dubrajpurgranite Hill, Massanjore Dam, Santiniketan, and Tarapith Temple, making Bakreshwar Mahishmardini Temple an important spiritual and cultural destination in West Bengal.
