Vishwanath Temple Guptkashi

Nestled in the scenic hill town of Guptkashi in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, this temple stands as a significant pilgrimage centre for devotees traveling through the Garhwal Himalayas.

The temple is renowned for its Nagara (North Indian) style of architecture and is considered a living heritage temple, managed by a local panchayat trust. The main sanctum enshrines Lord Shiva, and the temple complex also features shrines for Ardhanarishwara, Nandi, and Kaal Bhairava.

Pilgrims can participate in daily poojas and Jalabhishek, with special rituals such as Pradosha Puja and personal Rudrabhishek available on request. Poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of devotees.

Darshan at Vishwanath Temple Guptkashi is free of charge, making it welcoming for all visitors. The temple is open from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with a brief closure between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

Early morning (5–8 AM) and evening aarti times are considered the best periods for darshan, offering a tranquil spiritual experience.

The temple is particularly vibrant during major Hindu festivals such as Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Navratri & Dussehra (September-October), Shravan/Sawan (July-August), and Diwali & Dev Deepawali (October-November).

For those planning a visit, traditional or modest Indian attire is recommended. Men are advised to wear trousers, jeans with shirts or kurtas, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or suits/kurti with covered legs and shoulders. Shorts and sleeveless clothing are discouraged.

Reaching Guptkashi is convenient via multiple routes. Pilgrims can arrive at Haridwar or Rishikesh by train or bus, or fly into Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport. From there, travel proceeds via Rudraprayag and along NH 107 to Guptkashi.

The temple is centrally located in the town, accessible by local transport or a short walk from the main market. Public parking is available in the market area, but visitors should note a 100–200 meter walk with 40–50 stairs to the temple, which is not wheelchair accessible.

Accommodation options in Guptkashi include the GMVN Tourist Rest House, private hotels, local guesthouses, and several dharamshalas near the market.

Prasadam such as vibhuti, chandan, mishri, or fruits/sweets is distributed, and free food (annadanam) is organized by local trusts during major festivals and peak pilgrimage seasons.
