Tungnath Temple (Panch Kedar)

Situated on Chandranath Parvat, just below the famous Chandrashila Peak, this ancient hill temple is located in Chopta, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand.

Recognized as an ASI-protected monument, Tungnath is celebrated for its Nagara (North Indian) architectural style and its spiritual significance as part of the Panch Kedar circuit. The temple is open seasonally, welcoming devotees from late April or May until early November.

Daily darshan timings are from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Entry for darshan is free, allowing pilgrims to experience the divine ambiance without any fee. Morning Aarti is performed at 6:00 AM, followed by Evening Aarti at 6:30 PM.

The sacred Rudrabhishek pooja is also conducted, with rituals performed in Sanskrit and Hindi. Tungnath Temple is not only dedicated to Lord Shiva but also features sanctums for Goddess Parvati and the Pandava brothers.

The temple comes alive during festivals such as the Opening Ceremony (Kapat Utsav) in April-May, Maha Shivaratri in February-March, Shravan Month Festivities in July-August, and the Closing Ceremony (Kapat Bandh) in November.

The best time to visit is during the early morning hours or the festival season, with summers (March–May) and winters (November–February) offering distinct experiences.

Devotees are expected to follow a modest dress code: men should wear traditional or full-length trousers and shirts, while women are advised to wear full-length ethnic attire such as Salwar Kameez or Sarees, avoiding revealing clothes or shorts. Reaching Tungnath involves a scenic journey.

Pilgrims typically travel to Rishikesh or Haridwar by road or rail, then proceed by bus or taxi via Devprayag, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag to Ukhimath. From Ukhimath, a 30 km uphill drive leads to Chopta, the base camp. The final stretch is a 3.5–4 km uphill trek on a stone-paved path to the temple.

Limited open-air parking is available at Chopta, but vehicles cannot proceed beyond this point. There is no lodging at the temple itself.

However, a variety of accommodations, including campsites, eco-resorts, homestays, and the GMVN Tourist Rest House, are available at Chopta base camp and in Ukhimath.

Basic prasad such as dry sweets or mishri is distributed at the temple, while free meals are organized in nearby valley villages during major festivals. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main shrine but is allowed in the outer premises and the breathtaking Himalayan landscape.
