Bhukund Bhairavnath Temple

This ancient temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with other deities such as Bhukund Bhairav, Bhairon Baba, Kshetrapal, and minor shrines including Pandava footprints also worshipped here.

The temple is recognized as a living heritage site and holds a special place for devotees visiting the sacred Kedarnath valley. The temple is open for darshan from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM during the pilgrimage season, which typically runs from May to November.

It remains closed in winter due to heavy snowfall. Entry for darshan is free, allowing pilgrims to experience the spiritual atmosphere without any fee.

The best times to visit are early morning between 5–8 AM, throughout the morning until noon, during the winter months (November to February), and especially during festival seasons.

Daily aarti and Rudrabhishek are performed in the temple, with special opening and closing pujas held in May and November. Rituals are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, maintaining the traditional sanctity of the site.

The temple celebrates significant festivals such as the Opening and Closing of Doors (May & November), Maha Shivaratri (February–March), and Bhairava Ashtami or Kala Ashtami (November–December), drawing pilgrims from across the region.

To reach Bhukund Bhairavnath Temple, pilgrims typically travel to Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun by road or rail. From Rishikesh or Haridwar, a drive via NH 107 leads to Sonprayag, followed by a local shuttle to Gaurikund.

The main trek to Kedarnath is about 16 km uphill from Gaurikund, with helicopter options available from Phata, Sersi, or Guptkashi. From Kedarnath Temple, a further 500–800 meter uphill trek (about 20–30 minutes) brings visitors to Bhukund Bhairavnath Temple.

There is no direct parking or wheelchair access; vehicles are parked at Sonprayag. Accommodation is available at GMVN Tourist Rest House, private lodges, tents, and ashrams near Kedarnath, with additional hotels and guest houses at Sonprayag, Phata, and Guptkashi.

Simple prasadam, such as dry sweets and fruits, is distributed to devotees, with occasional support for sadhus and pilgrims.

Nearby attractions include Kedarnath Temple (0.8 km), Adi Shankaracharya Samadhi (1 km), Gandhi Sarovar (3 km), Triyuginarayan Temple (25 km), and Guptkashi’s Kashi Vishwanath Temple (35 km).

Photography is prohibited inside or facing the main sanctum, but respectful photography is allowed in the outer premises. Pilgrims are advised to follow the dress code, which requires traditional or modest attire and warm woolen layers due to the high-altitude climate.
