About

Agasteshwar Mahadev Temple, also known locally as Agastyamuni Temple, Agastyamuni Mandir, Augustmuni Temple, and Agasteshwar Mahadev Mandir, is a revered pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated in the picturesque town of Agastyamuni in Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, this ancient temple stands near the banks of the Mandakini River, close to the local market and helipad area.

The temple is recognized for its tranquil hilltop setting and is a significant spiritual destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings.

The temple enshrines Lord Shiva as the primary deity, with stone-carved idols of Maharishi Agastya, Rishyasringa Maharshi, and various other gods and goddesses adorning the sanctum.

Daily worship and aarti are performed, along with special rituals such as Jalabhishek, conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi. Devotees can participate in free darshan during the temple’s opening hours, which are from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and again from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

The best time to visit is early morning or during the festival season, with winter and summer months also being favorable for pilgrims.

Agasteshwar Mahadev Temple is especially vibrant during festivals such as the Baisakhi Fair in April, Maha Shivaratri in February-March, and Shravan Month Observations in July-August.

The temple maintains a traditional dress code: men are expected to wear dhotis, kurtas, or full-length trousers with shirts, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis, avoiding shorts and sleeveless attire. Reaching the temple is convenient for travelers.

The nearest railway stations are Rishikesh (Yog Nagari Rishikesh, 150 km) and Haridwar (170 km), while the closest airports are Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun (170 km) and Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi (410 km).

From Rishikesh or Haridwar, pilgrims can take National Highway 7 towards Rudraprayag, then proceed north along the Mandakini River to Augustmuni, which is just 9.4 km from Rudraprayag.

The temple is centrally located in Augustmuni town, only about 100 meters from the local bus stop and market, with open parking and roadside vehicle stopping spaces nearby.

For accommodation, visitors can stay at the GMVN Tourist Rest House in Augustmuni, choose from local budget hotels and guest houses, or explore a wider range of hotels in Rudraprayag town, just 10 km away.

After the daily aarti, devotees are offered traditional prasadam, including seasonal fruits, sweets, vibhuti, and flowers. While large-scale annadanam is not a daily feature, local community arrangements and small eateries are available in the town.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited near the main sanctum and inner shrine, but casual photography of the temple’s exterior is generally permitted with the approval of local priests.

Nearby attractions include August Kund/Parvati Sarovar, Rudraprayag Sangam, Koteshwar Temple, Dhari Devi Temple, Chopta, and Kartik Swami Mandir, making Agasteshwar Mahadev Temple an ideal spiritual and cultural destination in Uttarakhand.
