About

Velneshwar Temple, also known as Velneshwar Mahadev Mandir or Shree Velneshwar Mandir, is a revered ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Located near the scenic Velneshwar Beach in the village of Velneshwar, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, this temple serves as a prominent pilgrimage centre for devotees seeking spiritual solace along the Konkan coastline.

The temple is also home to shrines for Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Vishnu, Surya, and Durga, making it a significant destination for worshippers of multiple deities.

The temple’s daily timings are from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, allowing devotees ample opportunity for darshan and participation in rituals.

Visitors can experience the serenity of the seaside atmosphere, especially during the early morning hours from 5 to 8 AM, which is considered one of the best times to visit.

The winter months from November to February and the festival seasons are also highly recommended for pilgrims and tourists alike. Velneshwar Temple offers free darshan entry, and devotees can participate in special poojas such as Rudrabhishek and Special Archana, conducted in Marathi and Sanskrit.

The temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Maha Shivaratri (February-March) and Shravan Maas (July-August), when the spiritual energy and community participation reach their peak.

The temple maintains a traditional dress code: men are encouraged to wear dhoti or mundu, and may need to remove upper garments near the inner sanctum during rituals.

Women are advised to wear sarees or long skirts with blouses, and those in pants or salwars may be required to wrap a dhoti or cloth before entering the sanctum. Reaching Velneshwar Temple is convenient via multiple routes.

From Mumbai, drive south via NH66 to Chiplun, then west toward Guhagar/Velneshwar road. From Pune, travel via Kumbharli Ghat to Chiplun, then onward to Guhagar and Velneshwar. Ratnagiri offers northbound routes via Jaigad or Nandivade.

Local transport options from Chiplun or Guhagar include auto-rickshaws, taxis, or MSRTC buses. The nearest railway stations are Chiplun (50 km) and Ratnagiri (65 km), while the closest airports are Kolhapur (150 km), Goa (200 km), and Mumbai (284 km).

Accommodation options range from MTDC Velneshwar resort and Kinara Velneshwar Beach House to local homestays in the village and hotels in Guhagar, 15 km away.

Ample open parking is available near the temple, with well-maintained approach roads and a flat outer complex featuring some steps to the shrine. Photography is permitted in the outer courtyard and open areas, but strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum.

Standard offerings such as flowers, bilva leaves, and naivedyam are available, and local meals can be arranged during festivals.

Nearby attractions include Velneshwar Beach, Dashabhuja Ganesh Mandir (4 km), Guhagar Beach (15 km), and Jaigad Fort & Lighthouse (22 km), making Velneshwar Temple a peaceful yet vibrant destination for spiritual seekers and tourists alike.
