Ganpatipule Temple

Positioned near the scenic Ganpatipule Beach, this seaside temple is recognized as a significant pilgrimage centre and holds the distinction of being a living heritage temple, managed by a local panchayat trust.

The temple is also referred to as Paschim Dwar-Devata, Paschim Dwarpalak, and Navsala Pavnara Ganpati, reflecting its deep-rooted spiritual significance in the region. The main deity, Lord Ganesha, is worshipped here along with Mooshak, his sacred mouse vehicle.

The temple’s origins trace back to the Maratha period, with the formal shrine established by Balabhat Bhide and later expanded by Maratha rulers, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and the Peshwas.

The temple’s architecture, while not conforming to a specific classical style, blends harmoniously with its natural seaside surroundings. Ganpatipule Temple welcomes devotees for darshan daily from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM.

There are multiple darshan entry options: free darshan, as well as special darshan passes priced at ₹200 and ₹500.

The temple conducts several poojas throughout the day, including Kakad Aarti (5:00–5:30 AM), Mahapuja/Shodashopachar Puja (7:30–8:00 AM), Madhyan Aarti (12:30–1:00 PM), Evening Aarti (7:00–7:30 PM), and Shejaarti/Night Aarti (8:40–9:00 PM). The Abhishek Puja is also available for devotees at ₹251.

All rituals are performed in Marathi and Sanskrit.

The temple observes several vibrant festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi (Bhadrapad Festival) in August–September, Magh Festival (Maghotsav) in January–February, Sankashti Chaturthi every month, Vasant Puja from March to May, Deepotsav and Diwali in October–November, and Dasara in September–October.

The best time to visit is during winter (November–February), early mornings, or during the evening aarti.

Devotees are required to follow a traditional dress code: men should wear dhoti, pyjama with upper cloth, or clean formal attire, while women are expected to wear saree, half-saree, or salwar/chudidhar. Saree with border is mandatory for inner sanctum rituals.

Reaching Ganpatipule Temple is convenient from major cities. From Mumbai, take NH-66 south past Mahad and Poladpur toward Nivali, then turn right to Ganpatipule via Hatkhamba, or take a train to Ratnagiri and a cab or bus onward.

From Pune, drive via Satara, Karad, and Amba Ghat, or use NH-66 through Chiplun. Ratnagiri Railway Station is about 30 km away, and Kolhapur and Goa Dabolim Airports are the nearest air gateways. Ample paid parking is available outside the temple, with wheelchair-friendly ramps at the entrance.

Free traditional khichdi prasad is served daily from 12:30 to 2:00 PM, and ladoo prasad can be purchased. Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum and prayer halls, but permitted outside.
