About

Vedagiriswarar Temple, also locally known as Kazhugu Koil, Eagle Temple, Pakshi-theertham, Thirukazhukundram Temple, or Tirukalukundram Temple, is a revered ancient hill temple and pilgrimage centre situated in Thirukazhukundram, Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu.

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, the temple also houses shrines for Goddess Parvati (Thiripurasundari Amman), Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma.

This living heritage temple is celebrated for its Dravidian architecture, with origins tracing back to the Pallava period and later renovations by the Chola kings.

Perched atop a 500-foot hill, Vedagiriswarar Temple is accessed by climbing 565 steps, offering devotees a spiritually uplifting journey. The temple is not wheelchair accessible, but parking is available at the foothill and in adjacent lanes.

The sanctum and outer premises reflect the grandeur of South Indian temple design, making it a significant destination for those interested in history and architecture. The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM and from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM.

Early morning visits between 5–8 AM, the winter months from November to February, and the festival seasons are considered the best times for darshan. Devotees can choose between free darshan and a special darshan for a nominal fee of INR 2.

Traditional attire is required: men are expected to wear dhoti with a shirt or formal wear, avoiding shorts, while women are advised to wear saree, churidar, or salwar kameez, maintaining modesty. Poojas at Vedagiriswarar Temple are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit.

Offerings include Archana (INR 5), Special Abishekam/Aradhana on pradosham, new moon, and full moon days, and the unique Sangu Theertham Darshan (INR 5). Sacred prasadam and Sangu Theertham water are distributed to devotees, with annadanam (community meal) organized on special occasions.

The temple is vibrant during festivals such as the Chithirai Festival (April–May), Aadi Pooram (July–August), Pushpakara Mela (once every 12 years), Full Moon Days (Girivalam), Tamil New Year's Day (April), Deepavali (October–November), and Pongal (January).

Reaching Vedagiriswarar Temple is convenient: from Chennai, take a local train to Chengalpattu Junction (14 km away), followed by a bus or taxi; or travel by road via ECR towards Mahabalipuram, then inland to Thirukazhukundram (about 70 km).

Local buses connect Chengalpattu and Mahabalipuram to the temple town. The nearest railway stations are Chengalpattu Junction and Thirukazhukundram, while Chennai International Airport is 55 km away.

Accommodation options include budget and mid-range hotels in Chengalpattu and Mahabalipuram, as well as basic temple guesthouses at the Adivaram area. Nearby attractions include the Shore Temple and Five Rathas in Mahabalipuram, Sadras Fort, Kovalam Beach, and Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary.
