About

Varadharaja Perumal Temple, also locally known as Hastagiri, Attiyuran, or Perumal Koil, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre and Divya Desam in the historic city of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. This ancient hill temple, situated on W Mada Street in Vishnu Kanchi (Chinna Kanchipuram), is dedicated to Lord Varadharaja Perumal (Vishnu) and is celebrated for its Dravidian architecture. The temple is also home to other deities such as Perundevi Thayar, Atthi Varadar, and unique golden and silver lizard sculptures symbolizing sage Gautama’s disciples.

Dating back to the Pallava period, the Varadharaja Perumal Temple was originally built by the Pallava dynasty and later expanded by the Cholas, Pandyas, Cheras, Kakatiyas, Hoysalas, and the Vijayanagara Empire. Its architectural grandeur and historical significance have earned it a place as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Devotees can participate in various poojas and rituals, with daily timings from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Key poojas include Suprabhatham & Viswaroopa Darshan (6:00 AM – 7:30 AM), Thiruvaradhanam (7:30 AM – 12:30 PM), Uchikala Pooja (12:30 PM), and Ekantha Seva (8:30 PM – 9:00 PM). Special poojas such as Sahasranama Archana and Abhishekam are offered in the mornings, with fees ranging from INR 200 to INR 3000. Rituals are conducted in both Sanskrit and Tamil, ensuring a spiritually enriching experience for all devotees.

Darshan options include free darshan as well as special darshan tickets priced at INR 50 and INR 500. The temple recommends traditional attire: men are advised to wear dhoti with shirt or kurta pajama, while women should opt for sarees, salwar kameez, or churidar with dupatta, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Varadharaja Perumal Temple is especially vibrant during festivals such as Vaikasi Brahmotsavam (May-June), Garudotsavam, Navratri (October-November), Vaikunta Ekadasi and Adhyayana Utsavam (December-January), Chitra Pournami (April-May), Pongal (January), and the rare Atthi Varadar festival held every 40 years.

Reaching the temple is convenient: from Chennai, take a suburban train to Kanchipuram or Chengalpattu, or drive via the Chennai-Bengaluru Highway (NH48). From Kanchipuram Railway Station (4 km) or Bus Stand, auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available. The nearest airports are Chennai International Airport (70 km) and Tirupati Airport (110 km).

Devotees can enjoy special prasadams like Thulasi Theertham, and annadanam is provided on special occasions. Accommodation is plentiful, with over 70 hotels, dharamshalas, and ashrams available in Kanchipuram. The temple offers dedicated parking near the main entrance, though it can be crowded during peak times. Photography is permitted in outer courtyards and gopurams, but strictly prohibited inside the main sanctum.
