About

Kanchi Kamakshi Temple, also known locally as Kamakshi Amman Temple or Kamakoti Nayaki Kovil, stands as a revered Shakti Peetha and ancient pilgrimage centre in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. Located on Kamakshi Amman Sannathi Street, this temple is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi (Kamakoti Nayaki), a powerful form of Parvati/Adi Parashakti. The temple also houses shrines for Vishnu in his Varaha form and the sacred Sri Chakra, which is said to have been installed by Adi Shankaracharya. With its striking Dravidian architecture, the temple is a living heritage site, originally built by the Pallava dynasty and later renovated by the Chola kings.

Devotees can experience darshan of the presiding deity during the temple’s opening hours: 5:30 AM to 12:00/12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM. Free darshan is available for all visitors. The best time to visit is early morning between 5 and 8 AM, during evening aarti, or in the winter months from November to February. The temple is especially vibrant during major festivals such as Navaratri (September-October), Kamakshi Jayanti (March), Panguni Uthiram (March-April), and the monthly Pournami Puja.

A wide array of poojas is performed daily and during special occasions. Popular rituals include Abhishekam (6:00 AM – 7:00 AM, ₹250), Kumkumarchana (₹51), Sahasranama Archana (morning, ₹200), and the grand Navavarna Pooja (Pournami, 9:30 PM, ₹2000). Special events like the Golden Chariot Procession (Rathotsavam) are held on Fridays, full moon and new moon days, and the first day of the Tamil month at 7:30 PM (₹2000). Poojas are conducted in both Sanskrit and Tamil, ensuring accessibility for devotees.

Dress code is strictly observed: men are encouraged to wear dhoti with shirt or kurta pajama, while women should wear saree or churidar/salwar kameez with dupatta, dressing conservatively at all times. Photography is prohibited inside the sanctum and around the main deity, and it is advisable to leave mobile phones in your vehicle or use the provided lockers.

Reaching the temple is convenient. From Chennai, take NH48 towards Kanchipuram, exit for the city, and follow signs to Kamakshi Amman Temple. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available from the bus stand or railway station. The nearest railway station is Kanchipuram Railway Station (2 km away), while Chennai International Airport is about 75 km from the temple. Parking is available nearby for a nominal fee.

Accommodation options include Sri Kamakshi Chatram, budget and mid-range hotels on East Raja Street, and dharamshalas managed by Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam. Prasadam such as kumkum (free), panchamrit (₹30–₹100), and prasad packets (₹20–₹50) are offered, with common offerings including coconuts, flowers, turmeric, and sarees.
