Revered for its dedication to Lord Shiva, this temple is a significant spiritual destination for devotees and travelers seeking darshan and blessings.

The temple is also home to other deities such as Ma Uttarayani, Bhairava, Bhairavi, Lord Nrusingha, Lord Bhimeswara, and Sahadevesvara, making it a focal point for diverse worship traditions.

Built during the Chola period by the Bhaumakara Kings, Uttareswara Temple is a remarkable example of Kalinga architecture. Its heritage status as both a state and living heritage temple highlights its ongoing religious importance and architectural grandeur.

The temple’s riverside setting and proximity to major attractions like Lingaraj Temple (0.5 km), Bindusagar Lake (0.6 km), Mukteswara Temple (1.2 km), Rajarani Temple (1.5 km), and Udayagiri Caves (7 km) make it an essential stop for those exploring Bhubaneswar’s spiritual and historical landscape.

Uttareswara Temple welcomes devotees with free darshan, and the main poojas performed here include Jala Lagi (water offering), Rudrabhisheka, and Archana, all conducted in Sanskrit.

The temple operates daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with early mornings and evening aarti time being especially recommended for a peaceful visit.

The best time to visit is during winter (November to February), festival seasons, or during Sravana Mondays (July-August), Maha Shivaratri (February-March), Kartika Purnima (November), and the Chaitra festival (March-April), when the temple comes alive with vibrant rituals and gatherings.

Visitors are advised to follow the dress code: men should wear traditional or modest attire such as dhoti-kurta or full-length trousers with shirt, while women should opt for saree, salwar kameez, or long kurtis with leggings, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Shorts, sleeveless vests, and caps are not permitted inside the inner sanctum. Reaching Uttareswara Temple is convenient—arrive in Bhubaneswar by road, rail, or air, head to the Old Town area via NH 16 or local transport, and follow signage towards Bindusagar Lake near Kedara-Gouri Chowk.

The temple is just 4 km from Bhubaneswar Railway Station and Biju Patnaik International Airport, with several premium hotels, budget lodges, and guest houses available within a short distance for accommodation.

Photography is allowed in the outer courtyard and exterior zones, but strictly prohibited inside the inner sanctum. During major festivals, devotees can partake in traditional Odia Mahaprasad and dry offerings, with food distribution occurring on these auspicious occasions.

Street-side or open-area parking is available nearby, though wheelchair accessibility is limited due to traditional stone steps. Uttareswara Temple offers a spiritually enriching experience in the heart of Bhubaneswar’s sacred landscape.
