Lingaraj Temple

Revered as a major pilgrimage centre and an ancient riverbank temple, it is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Parvati and a host of other Hindu deities enshrined in 108 sub-shrines within the complex.

The temple’s historical significance is highlighted by its construction during the Chola period under Somavamshi king Jajati Keshari, with later additions by Ganga dynasty rulers.

Recognized as an ASI protected monument and a state heritage site, Lingaraj Temple is a spiritual and architectural landmark in Khordha district.

Devotees can experience the divine presence of Lord Shiva through free darshan, available daily from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 3:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

The best time to visit is in the early morning hours (5–8 AM), during winter months (November to February), or throughout the vibrant festival seasons.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Prathamastami and Pravarana Sasthi (November–December), and Ashokastami (Rukuna Rath Yatra) in March–April, drawing thousands of pilgrims to the temple.

A variety of poojas are performed in multiple languages such as Sanskrit, Odia, Hindi, and English. The daily rituals begin with Mangala Aarti/Pahuda Bhanga from 5:00 AM to 6:00 AM, followed by Jalabhishek/Dudhabhishek Puja until 2:00 PM, and Midday Dhupa & Bhog Offerings around noon.

Rudrabhisheka/Mahanyasa is available as a scheduled service (INR 1299), and the day concludes with Evening Aarti & Sandhya Dhupa from 7:00 PM to 7:30 PM.

Visitors are required to adhere to a traditional dress code: men should wear dhoti and kurta or conservative full-length attire, while women are expected to dress in sarees, salwar kameez, or similar modest Indian outfits.

Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the main temple courtyard and sanctum, with all electronic devices to be deposited at lockers outside.

Reaching Lingaraj Temple is convenient—arrive in Bhubaneswar via Biju Patnaik International Airport (4.5 km away) or Bhubaneswar Railway Station (3 km away), then take a local auto-rickshaw, cab, or city bus to Old Town.

Parking is available at nearby municipal and temple lots, though accessibility for wheelchairs is limited due to the ancient pathways. For those seeking prasadam, traditional bhog offerings such as Kora, Khuda, and cooked rice/dal/vegetable items are distributed or sold near the exits.
