About

Umamaheshwaram Temple Achampet, nestled in the scenic Nallamala Forest near Rangapur village in Achampet, Nagarkurnool district, Telangana, stands as a revered pilgrimage centre and ancient hill temple.

Also known locally as Umamaheswaram, Uma Maheswaram, Maheshwaram, and affectionately called the “Poor Man’s Ooty” for its cool climate and lush surroundings, this temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva.

The sanctum also enshrines Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, and local guardian deities, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees.

The temple’s rock-cut architecture, with origins traced to the Maurya or Satavahana eras (2nd century AD) and later expansions by the Kakatiya and Recherla Shudra kings, reflects its rich heritage.

Recognized as a state heritage and living heritage temple, Umamaheshwaram is both a spiritual and historical landmark. Its cave temple structure, set against the backdrop of forested hills, offers a tranquil retreat for pilgrims and nature enthusiasts alike.

Umamaheshwaram Temple is open daily from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with extended hours up to 8:30 PM during festivals. The best time to visit is during winter (November to February), early mornings between 5–8 AM, or during the vibrant festival season.

Major festivals celebrated here include Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Sarannavarathri/Dussehra (September–October), Karthika Masam (November–December), monthly Ardra Nakshatram Poojas, and Purnima special poojas. Devotees can choose between free darshan and special darshan (₹10).

Various poojas are performed in Telugu and Sanskrit, ranging from Pratyeka Darshanam (₹10), Swarna Darshanam (₹30), Linga Sparsha Darshanam (₹50), to elaborate rituals like Rudrabhishekam (₹1000), Uma Maheshwara Vratam (₹500), and Uma Maheshwara Kalyanam (₹5000).

Daily annadanam (free meals) is served from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and prasadam such as puliyodarai, sweet offerings, vibhuti, and kumkum are distributed.

Visitors are advised to adhere to the traditional dress code: men should wear dhoti, pancha, or long trousers with shirt or kurta, while women are expected to wear saree, salwar kameez, or churidar with dupatta, ensuring shoulders and knees are covered.

Photography is prohibited inside the main sanctum but allowed in the outer complex and scenic areas, subject to temple guidelines.

Reaching Umamaheshwaram Temple is convenient via NH 765 from Hyderabad, passing through Kalwakurthy to Achampet and Mannanur Checkpost, followed by a scenic ghat road ascent.

The nearest railway stations are Jadcherla (48 km) and Mahabubnagar (70 km), with Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad) about 120 km away. Accommodation options include a basic temple guesthouse (₹50/night), hotels in Achampet (10–15 km away), and eco-cottages in the Mannanur/Amrabad area.
