About

Sri Gnana Saraswathi Temple Basar, also known locally as Basara Temple, Gnana Saraswati Devasthanam, Vyasapuri, and Vasara, is a revered ancient temple situated on the serene banks of the Godavari River in Nirmal district, Telangana.

This temple, built by the Chalukya kings in the distinctive Chalukya architectural style, is a significant pilgrimage centre, drawing devotees and families seeking blessings from Goddess Shakti, the presiding deity.

The temple is also home to Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Kali, making it a unique confluence of divine feminine energies. The temple operates daily from 4:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 8:30 PM, offering ample opportunities for darshan and participation in rituals.

Early mornings, especially between 5:00 and 8:00 AM, are considered the best time to visit, particularly during the winter months from November to February and throughout the vibrant festival season.

Devotees are encouraged to follow the traditional dress code: men are recommended to wear a dhoti with upper cloth, while women are advised to wear sarees or churidar with dupatta.

Sri Gnana Saraswathi Temple offers both free and special darshan options, with special darshan available for a nominal fee of INR 100.

A wide range of poojas are performed in Sanskrit and Telugu, including Mangalya Vaidya/Suprabhatam (3:30–4:00 AM), Abhishekam (4:00–5:00 AM, INR 200), Nijaroopa Darshan (4:30–5:30 AM, INR 200), Alankara (5:00–6:00 AM), and Maha Aarti (6:00–6:30 AM and 12:30–1:00 PM).

The temple is especially known for Aksharabhyasam, the sacred initiation into learning, performed from 7:30 AM onwards (INR 100 for regular, INR 1000 for special). Other rituals include Kumkumarchana (INR 50), Pallaki Seva on Fridays (INR 200), and Satyanarayana Swamy Pooja (INR 100).

Major festivals celebrated at the temple include Vasantha Panchami (February), Maha Shivaratri (February–March), Devi Navaratrulu/Dasara (September–October), and Vyasa Pournima (July), attracting pilgrims from across the region.

Reaching the temple is convenient: Basar Railway Station is just 2.5 km away, with frequent trains on the Hyderabad–Manmad section. Nizamabad Railway Station is 35 km away, and Nanded Airport is the nearest at 65 km, while Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad is 193 km distant.

The temple is easily accessible by road from Hyderabad, Nirmal, and Nizamabad, with ample parking available near the entrance. For accommodation, devotees can choose from options like TTD Guest House, Nakshatra Inn, Laxmi Grand Inn, Hrim Akshara Resort, and Devasthanam Cottages.

Nearby attractions include the Godavari River & Bathing Ghat, Vyasa Maharshi Cave, Vasavi Temple, and Laxmi Temple. The temple provides prasadam after the morning aarti and organizes daily free meal service (annadanam) for devotees.

Please note, photography is strictly prohibited within the temple premises, and cameras or phones must be deposited at the security counter. For more details, online darshan, or to plan your visit, refer to the official website at https://basaratemple.org or contact 08752-255550.
