Ulka Devi Temple

Dedicated to Goddess Shakti (Amman), this ancient hill temple stands as a living heritage site, attracting devotees and visitors seeking spiritual solace and panoramic views of the surrounding Soar Valley.

The temple is easily accessible from Pithoragarh town, which is well connected by highways from Kathgodam, Tanakpur, and Haldwani. Upon reaching Pithoragarh, one can take local transport or a private vehicle towards Chandak Road, traveling 1–4 km up a scenic ridge road.

The temple is conveniently located on the roadside ridge, adjacent to the local martyrs' war memorial, making it a prominent stop for pilgrims and tourists alike. Ulka Devi Temple welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 AM until sunset, approximately 7:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during the morning hours (8 AM–12 PM), evening aarti, or during the festival seasons, especially in winter (November–February) and summer (March–May). Weekdays are generally less crowded, offering a peaceful atmosphere for darshan and prayer.

Entry for darshan is free, and devotees are encouraged to adhere to the temple's dress code: conservative, modest clothing covering shoulders and knees, with footwear to be removed outside the inner sanctum for both men and women.

The temple is renowned for its daily aarti and diya lighting, with special worship held on Ashtami days.

Poojas are conducted in Sanskrit and Hindi, and the temple comes alive during major festivals such as the Chaitoli Festival (March–April), Navratri (Chaitra and Sharad, observed in March–April and September–October), and monthly Ashtami celebrations.

During these occasions, traditional dry or sweet prasad is distributed, and community feasts (bhandara) are organized, fostering a sense of unity among devotees. Accommodation options are plentiful in Pithoragarh town and along Chandak Road, within a 1–5 km radius of the temple.

Limited roadside parking is available, though large buses cannot park at the shrine, and wheelchair accessibility is basic due to uneven terrain and steps. Photography of the scenic valley and temple exterior is permitted, but restrictions may apply inside the sanctum during rituals.
