Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple

Dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Bhagvati (Maa Bhagwati) also worshipped here, this ancient cave temple is renowned for its spiritual ambiance and tranquil surroundings.

Its unique cave architecture, set amidst the hills, draws devotees and seekers who wish to experience darshan in a serene, natural setting. The temple is accessible from Pithoragarh town, which is well connected via major Kumaon transit routes from Kathgodam, Almora, or Tanakpur.

After reaching the town center, visitors can hire a local taxi, auto-rickshaw, or drive towards Ghighar Kholi / Klasim. The journey continues to the foothill base near Ancholi village, about 5 km from the town, where a steep flight of over 200 stone stairs leads pilgrims upwards.

On the way, devotees can pause at the Bhagvati temple situated midway. The final approach involves entering the cave through a narrow tunnel, which opens into the inner sanctum for darshan.

Kapileshwar Mahadev Temple is open daily from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with general darshan and abhishekam available throughout these hours. All poojas are conducted in Hindi. Entry for darshan is free, and simple prasadam such as sugar crystals, fruits, vibhuti, or dry sweets is distributed.

On festival days, community feasts (bhandara) are organized, adding to the festive spirit. Major festivals celebrated include Mahashivaratri (February-March), Shravan Maas (July-August), and Navratri (both Chaitra and Sharad).

For those planning a visit, the best times are early mornings between 5–8 AM, during the winter (November–February) or summer (March–May) months, and on weekdays when the temple is less crowded.

Modest traditional attire is expected: men should wear trousers or jeans with shirts or t-shirts, while women are advised to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or modest kurtis. Travelers can reach the temple via Tanakpur Railway Station (149 km) or Kathgodam Railway Station (290 km).
