About

Ulavi Channabasaveshwara Temple, also known locally as Shri Kshetra Ulavi, Ulavi Basaveshwara Swami Temple, or Ulavi Gudi, is a revered pilgrimage centre nestled in the scenic hill ranges of Joida Taluk, Ulavi, in Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka.

Recognized as an ancient temple with a history dating back to the Chola period, it was built by 12th-century Sharanas and has been maintained by the Kittur family trust for over two centuries.

The temple is known for its mixed and renovated architectural style, blending heritage with contemporary touches. The temple is dedicated to Channabasaveshwara, with Akka Nagalambike also worshipped here.

Pilgrims and devotees can experience a serene spiritual atmosphere, especially during the daily poojas, special poojas at the Samadhi, Arathi, and Kanike, all conducted in Kannada. The temple offers free darshan for all visitors, making it accessible for everyone seeking blessings.

Ulavi Channabasaveshwara Temple is open to devotees on Mondays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 5:00 AM to 9:00 PM, and from Tuesday to Friday between 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM.

The best time to visit is during winter months (November to February), early mornings between 5:00 and 8:00 AM, or during the vibrant festival season. Notable festivals celebrated here include the Ulavi Jathre (Annual Fair) in February and the Karthika Pournami Deepotsava during the Karthika month.

For those planning a visit, the temple maintains a modest dress code: men are advised to wear traditional attire such as dhoti or respectful pants and shirts, while women are encouraged to wear sarees, churidars, or long skirts with tops.

The temple complex is wheelchair accessible and provides a free parking lot for visitors’ convenience. Pilgrims can reach Ulavi by road from Dandeli (approximately 50 km), Karwar (54–86 km), or Hubballi/Dharwad via the Haliyal-Dandeli-Ulavi route.

It is recommended to travel during daytime due to winding jungle roads. The nearest railway stations are Karwar (54 km), Londa Junction (70 km), and Dharwad/Hubballi (100 km).

The closest airports include Hubballi Airport (100 km), Goa Dabolim International Airport (130 km), and Belagavi Airport (150 km).

Accommodation is available in basic, low-cost rooms managed by the Temple Trust, offered on a first-come, first-served basis at Shri Channabasaweshwar Prasad Nilaya and Yatri Nivas Ulavi.

The temple also provides free meals (Annadasoha) daily: breakfast from 8:00–8:30 AM, lunch from 1:30–3:00 PM, and dinner from 8:30–9:30 PM. Photography is permitted in the outer complex but prohibited inside the main shrine.

Nearby attractions include Aakala Gavi (Aakala Cave), Panchalingagavi, Syntheri Rocks (20 km), Kali River/Kadra Dam Viewpoint (20 km), and Vibhuti Falls, making Ulavi Channabasaveshwara Temple a spiritually enriching and scenic destination for pilgrims and travelers alike.
