About

Gokarna Mahabaleshwara Temple, also known locally as Dakshina Kashi, Mahabaleshwara Temple, or simply Gokarna Temple, is a revered pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Situated in the Main Beach area of Gokarna, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, this ancient seaside temple is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and holds the distinction of being a Jyotirlinga shrine.

The temple is also home to other deities such as Maha Ganapati and Goddess Parvati, making it a significant destination for devotees seeking spiritual solace on the western coast of India.

The temple welcomes devotees daily with darshan timings from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and again from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Free darshan is available for all visitors, allowing pilgrims to experience the sanctity of the shrine without any entry fee.

For those wishing to participate in rituals, the temple offers a wide range of poojas including Abhisheka, Narayan Bali Puja, Tripindi Shraddha, Pitru Dosha Puja, Pind Daan, Thila Homa, Maha Mrityunjaya Homam, Maha Ganapathi Shanti, Navagraha Shanti, Shata Rudra Havana, Tulabhara, Bhootabali, and Mahapooja.

Some special poojas, such as Narayan Bali Puja and Tripindi Shraddha, are conducted at a specified fee. Rituals are performed in Sanskrit and Kannada, catering to a diverse group of devotees.

The temple observes major festivals like Maha Shivaratri (February–March) and Kartika Deepotsav (November–December), drawing large crowds during these auspicious periods.

The best time to visit is early morning or during the winter months from November to February, as well as during the festival season for a spiritually enriching experience.

Devotees are required to follow a strict dress code: men should wear a dhoti (pancha) and remain bare-chested, while women are expected to wear a saree or traditional attire covering the shoulders and below the knees.

Photography is strictly prohibited inside the main temple premises to maintain the sanctity of the site. Reaching Gokarna Mahabaleshwara Temple is convenient via multiple modes of transport. The nearest railway station is Gokarna Road, 10 km away, with Ankola and Kumta stations also nearby.

Dabolim Airport in Goa (140 km) and Mangalore International Airport (235 km) are the closest airports. From Gokarna Road station, taxis, auto-rickshaws, and local buses are available to the main bus stand, followed by a short walk to the temple.

Limited parking is available near the temple, with additional parking at Gokarna Main Beach. Accommodation options include temple trust rooms, budget and mid-range hotels, guesthouses in Gokarna town, and beach shacks and resorts at Kudle Beach.

The temple also provides free lunch (Amrutanna Prasada Bhojana) for devotees from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Nearby attractions include Gokarna Main Beach, Shree Maha Ganapati Dev Temple, Kudle Beach, Om Beach, Gogarbha Shiva Cave, and Mirjan Fort.
