About

Idagunji Mahaganapati Temple, also known locally as Mhatobar Shree Vinayaka Devaru, Edakunj Kshetra, and Kunjaranya, is a revered pilgrimage centre dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

Nestled on the banks of a river in the tranquil Idagunji Katri / Idagunji Road area of Idagunji, Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka, this ancient temple is a significant destination for devotees seeking darshan and spiritual solace.

The temple showcases Kerala-style architecture and stands as a living heritage temple, with its origins attributed to sage Valakhilya and local patronage. While the exact historical period remains unknown or disputed, the temple continues to attract thousands of pilgrims each year.

The serene village setting and riverbank location make it a peaceful retreat for worshippers and visitors alike. Darshan at Idagunji Mahaganapati Temple is free for all devotees.

The temple is open daily from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM and again from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM, making early mornings and winter months (November to February) the best time to visit.

Devotees are encouraged to adhere to the traditional dress code: men should wear dhoti, pancha, or formal long trousers, while women are expected to wear sarees, half-sarees, or salwar kameez/churidar. Casual wear, shorts, and sleeveless clothing are discouraged.

A variety of poojas are performed in Sanskrit and Kannada, including Abhisheka at 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 7:00 PM, and Pooja at 8:00 AM, 12:30 PM, and 8:00 PM.

Special offerings such as Rudrabhisheka, Kalpokta Sahasranama, Hoovina Pooja, Phala Panchamrata, and Appane Cheeti Seva are available for devotees. The temple celebrates Vinayaka Chaturthi (Ganesh Chaturthi) during August-September and Sankashta Chaturthi / Angarika Chaturthi every month.

Getting to the temple is convenient: follow NH-66 towards Honnavar or Murudeshwar, look for the Idagunji entrance arch near the Manki/Honavar border, and drive about 4 km on Idagunji Road. Local KSRTC buses and shared auto-rickshaws are available from Honnavar Bus Stand (14–15 km away).

The nearest railway stations are Manki (7.5 km), Honnavar (14.5 km), and Murudeshwar (19 km).

For air travelers, the closest airports are Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Airport in Shivamogga (133 km), Goa Dabolim International Airport (150 km), Manohar International Airport, Mopa (158 km), and Mangaluru International Airport (165 km).

Devotees can enjoy the temple's signature Panchakhadya prasadam and partake in free lunch (Prasada Bhojana) served daily between 12:00 PM and 2:30 PM at the Mayura Prasada Bhojanalaya.

Accommodation is available at the temple trust guest house (Mangala Karyalaya) with basic rooms and dormitories, while hotels and homestays can be found in Honnavar and Murudeshwar.

Ample parking and basic wheelchair-friendly access are provided, though photography is strictly prohibited within the temple premises.
