About

Thiruporur Murugan Temple, also known locally as Thiruporur Kandaswamy Temple, Kanthaswamy Temple, Pōriyūr, Yuddhapuri, and Samarapuri, is a revered ancient temple and pilgrimage centre situated on Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) in Thiruporur, Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu.

This temple is dedicated primarily to Lord Murugan and is renowned for its Dravidian architecture and historical significance, with origins tracing back to the Pallava period.

The temple was discovered and renovated by Sri Chidambaram Swamigal in the 18th century and continues to be a living heritage temple managed by a local trust. The main sanctum enshrines Lord Murugan, accompanied by his consorts Valli and Deivanai.

The temple complex also houses shrines for Vanmeeganadar (Lord Shiva), Pranavambigai, Visalakshi, Kasi Viswanathar, Dakshinamurthy, Durga, Bhairava, and Ganesha, making it a spiritually significant destination for devotees seeking darshan and blessings from multiple deities.

Temple timings are from 6:00 AM to 12:30 PM and 4:00 PM to 8:15 PM, with the best time to visit being early morning between 5–8 AM, during evening aarti, or in the vibrant festival season. For darshan, devotees can choose between free entry or opt for special darshan with a fee of ₹100.

Daily poojas include Kaalai Sandhi at 9:00 AM, Ucchi Kaala Pooja at 12:00 PM, Saaya Ratchai at 5:30 PM, and Raakkaalam at 8:00 PM. Archanai is also performed for a nominal fee, and rituals are conducted in Tamil and Sanskrit.

The temple observes several important festivals, such as Vaigaasi Visaagam (May–June), Maasi Bramorchavam (February–March), Paalkudam/Paal Kaavadi (January), Kandha Shashti (October–November), and Navarathri (October–November), drawing large numbers of devotees during these auspicious times.

Visitors are requested to adhere to the dress code: men should wear a dhoti with a shirt or trousers and shirts (short pants and lungis are not permitted), while women are advised to wear saree, churidar, or salwar kameez, avoiding modern or revealing attire.

Reaching Thiruporur Murugan Temple is convenient from Chennai and Chengalpattu. From Chennai International Airport (35 km), take the Outer Ring Road or Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road to OMR, proceeding south through Sholinganallur and Kelambakkam.

Tambaram and Chengalpattu Junction railway stations are both about 20 km away, with bus and taxi options available. Parking is provided near the temple, though it can be crowded on weekends, and accessibility is generally good, though wheelchair access to the main sanctum may be limited.

For accommodation, small guesthouses and lodges are available in Thiruporur, with more options in OMR/Kelambakkam (10–15 km away) and resorts in Mahabalipuram (20 km away).

Nearby attractions include Kailasanathar Temple, Sri Chidambara Swamigal Jeeva Samaadhi, Mahabalipuram, ISKCON Chennai, and Thirukalukundram Vedagiriswarar Temple. Photography is permitted in the outer temple complex and gopuram, but not inside the main sanctum.
