About

Pancha Rathas Temple, also known locally as Pancha Rathas, Five Rathas, or Pandava Rathas, is a remarkable ancient temple complex situated at the southern end of Mahabalipuram on Five Rathas Road, in Chengalpattu district, Tamil Nadu.

This site stands as a testament to the rock-cut architectural brilliance of the Pallava period and was built by King Narasimhavarman I of the Pallava Dynasty. Recognized as both an ASI protected monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Pancha Rathas Temple is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and devotees alike.

The temple complex is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva, with Goddess Durga also enshrined among the deities. The rock-cut structures, carved from a single granite outcrop, showcase the artistic and engineering prowess of ancient artisans.

The entire site is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, making it accessible for early morning visits, which are especially recommended between 5–8 AM for a serene experience.

The winter months from November to February are considered the best time to visit due to the pleasant weather.

Visitors can enjoy free darshan with an entry fee of INR 40. There is no strict dress code for men or women; comfortable clothing is recommended to explore the site with ease.

Photography is permitted throughout the complex, but climbing on the rathas is strictly prohibited to preserve these historic monuments.

Reaching Pancha Rathas Temple is convenient from Chennai - take the East Coast Road (ECR) south towards Pondicherry for about 55–60 km, follow signs to Mahabalipuram town center or Shore Temple, and proceed to the southern end of the archaeological complex via Five Rathas Road.

Within Mahabalipuram, local auto-rickshaws, bicycles, or walking are popular ways to access the site. The nearest railway stations are Chengalpattu Junction (23 km away) and Chennai Central/Egmore (55 km away), while Chennai International Airport is 53 km from the temple.

For those planning an extended stay, there are multiple accommodation options nearby, including Chariot Beach Resort, Kaldan Samudhra Palace, Radisson Blu Resort Temple Bay, Bodhiwoods Resort, and budget guest houses in Fishermen Colony.

The temple complex also offers free parking, paid street parking, and wheelchair-accessible facilities, though some pathways may be uneven due to the natural rock surfaces.

Pancha Rathas Temple is also a cultural hub during the Mahabalipuram Dance Festival, held annually in December and January.

Visitors can further enrich their trip by exploring nearby attractions such as the Shore Temple, Descent of the Ganges (Arjuna’s Penance), Mahabalipuram Lighthouse, Varaha Cave Temple, and Krishna’s Butterball, all located within a kilometer of the site.

This unique blend of spiritual significance, historical grandeur, and architectural marvel makes Pancha Rathas Temple an essential stop for any traveler in Tamil Nadu.
