About

Thiruparankundram Cave Temple, also known locally as Subramaniya Swamy Temple, Thenparankundram, Umai Andavar Koil, and Skandamalai, is a renowned ancient pilgrimage centre situated in Thiruparankundram, Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

This temple, dedicated primarily to Lord Murugan, stands as a testament to the rock-cut architectural style of the Pandya period and is recognized as an ASI protected monument.

The sanctum also houses other deities including Goddess Devasena, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha, and Goddess Durga, making it a significant spiritual destination for devotees of various Hindu traditions.

The temple operates daily from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 4:00 PM to 8:30 PM, offering devotees ample opportunity for darshan and participation in rituals.

For a more peaceful experience, early mornings (5–8 AM), winter months (November to February), and weekdays are considered the best times to visit, as these periods tend to be less crowded.

The temple enforces a traditional dress code: men are required to wear dhotis with shirts, pyjamas, or pants with an upper cloth, while women are expected to wear sarees, salwar kameez, or churidar with dupatta. Shorts, lungis, ripped jeans, skirts, tight leggings, and short outfits are discouraged.

Pilgrims can choose from various darshan options, including free darshan, special darshan (with a nominal fee of ₹20), and VIP darshan. Daily poojas are conducted in Tamil, beginning with Thiruvananthal at 5:30 AM and concluding with Palliyarai at 9:00 PM.

Rituals such as Vizha Poojai, Kalasanthi, Thirukaka Santhi, Uchikalam, Sayaratchai, and Artha Jamam punctuate the day, offering devotees multiple opportunities for worship.

The temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Panguni Uthiram (March–April), Chithirai Thiruvizha (April–May), Vaikasi Visakam (May–June), Aadi Krithigai (July–August), Navrathri (September–October), Kandha Sashti (October–November), Thai Poosam (January–February), Vaikunta Ekadasi (December–January), and Padi Puja during Tamil New Year.

Reaching Thiruparankundram Cave Temple is convenient. From Madurai city centre, visitors can take a local bus from Periyar Bus Stand or Madurai Junction, hire an auto or taxi (8–10 km, 20–30 minutes), or take a local train to Tirupparankundram Railway Station, just 1 km away.

Madurai Airport (IXM) is only 5.8 km from the temple, with taxis readily available. The temple offers basic dormitory accommodation, with budget lodges nearby and better hotel options in Madurai city centre, about 10 km away.

For those interested in exploring the region, nearby attractions include Meenakshi Amman Temple, Arulmigu Koodal Azhagar Temple, Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal, and Gandhi Memorial Museum.

Dedicated parking is available, though it can get crowded during weekends and festivals, and special assistance is provided for senior citizens. Photography is permitted only in the outer premises, with strict prohibitions inside the main sanctum.

Prasadam includes abhishekam water from Noopura Ganga, and free meals (annadanam) are offered on festival days. For more information or online darshan, visit the official website at https://hrce.tn.gov.in.
